Jazz and Knicks discussing Donovan Mitchell trade per Shams Charania and Tony Jones

The Lakers seem to be killing it in this trade. Dump the most toxic contract in the NBA and replace it with RJ, Bogey, and Cam? I mean, I know they are giving up 2 future unprotected picks, but if I remember correctly, we gave that and more up for Conley alone and we were not allowed to dump a toxic contract during that transaction.

Yeah, it’s a terrible trade idea. Any idea with RJ being involved but going to the Lakers is not happening.

Mitchell + Gay for Barrett/Fournier/Grimes works too. It also works if you swap Quickley and Grimes as well.

Mitchell + NAW for Barrett/Rose/Toppin also works. It works if you swap Toppin and Reddish too.

No idea if this site factors in the poison pill provision, but if this is doable, then this is my guess as to how this ultimately shakes out, based on everything that's been reported and everything's that happened so far. Maybe a super swap or something is thrown in as well.

I think Barrett complicates what sounds to be the plan taking shape to sign Kyrie (the extension makes sure of that), but if that isn't the most important thing to them then this is a pretty fire deal for the Lakers.

Jazz should probably send another player and receive a swap and 2nds from the Lakers in that deal, which I could sign off on.

Get a swap as well and some 2nds and I'm good. Happy to send another player too.

Really the only thing that I hate about is the chance that RJ is a real building block that helps float the Lakers through their impending rebuild.

I probably don't do the deal but I've been thinking about something like it.

How about this one? We get 6! unprotected firsts and Grimes and Toppin. Lakers get a young star in Barrett plus 2 players that are ideal for a Lebron team, and the Knicks get their superstar and a legit rotation piece.

The Knicks aren’t going to give up Barrett/Grimes/Toppin/Reddish AND 4 unprotected 1sts. Please stop doing trade ideas with RJ going to the Lakers as well. This is terrible stuff man.

If we’re being serious about a potential three-way trade with the Knicks and Lakers it looks more like this:

We send out Donovan and Gay to the Knicks, Bogey and Beasley to the Lakers.

We take back RJ, Fournier, 3 unprotected 1sts, 2 protected 1sts from the Knicks and Westbrook plus two unprotected 1sts from the Lakers.

The Knicks take back Donovan and Gay.

The Lakers take back Bogey, Beasley and Reddish.

We end up with RJ, Fournier and Westbrook plus 5 unprotected 1sts and 2 protected 1sts.

I like this. I'd consider the idea of subbing out RJ for Grimes + Toppin, but overall I like this. I don't think we were actually that far off. I may have gotten a little overzealous with trying to get Toppin and Grimes in my trade as well. Only reason I started thinking about RJ to LAL was I listened to the Knicks Film School podcast and they were talking about the wording of the Woj tweets from last night, and they didn't come out and say it, but they made it seem like the wording (which was really from RJ's agent) was a little odd, and something else (besides a straight deal to UTA) was afoot.

Lakers need more for their picks and we have more win now pieces than we need. Just dump 'em out.

Even if that package only gets one of their picks I’d do it. Does adding Vanderbilt get it done? Or Quickley from the Knicks with Reddish?

Overall your head is in the right space I just don’t see RJ to the Lakers under any circumstance. Including the Lakers actually helps us get RJ due to the PPP provision. We can send additional salary out to the Lakers in the same deal. The more we send out the more we can take in, etc.

And I could see one of the protecteds going to LA in this scenario... its not the amount of picks its the quality. We can get protected picks for Vando or other pieces later.

Yes, I agree with that. Hell, depending on the protected picks in the deal they can have them both as far as I’m concerned. We come away with RJ and 5 unprotected 1sts. That’s a dream come true.

And if its an absolute no go for the Knicks to send 3 unprotected picks I would take 23/28 and do swaps in 25/27 (with Minny) and we take all the protected picks.

I want Toppin in all the scenarios as well... since I think he is almost guaranteed to be included and would be fun.

What are the odds Ainge is just digging in to his Boston roots and has just been messing with NY this whole time with zero intention to trade DM there? He's just laughing on a beach in Cancun while his Zoom background is an office?
