What's new

Jazz @ Blazers 8:30 PM MT Game Thread

The Jazz offensive rating was actually pretty damn good again tonight despite looking bad to the eye.

The ceiling of this team is outrageous. We're legit. We just need to solidify the defense. Shouldn't be that difficult to find a serviceable backup defensive 5 in trade or off of the buyout market.

I really think Quin should consider giving some of Niangs minutes to Mudiay now too. Mudiay just does more good things on the floor than Niang.

Yeah, Ed Davis, Georges Niang and Jordan Clarkson were a disaster defensively. You can have one player on the floor who is an iffy defender. You can't have three. That's suicide.

It's one thing to give up open looks, but they were giving up plays to guys like Nas Little, Gary Trent and Carmelo.

I wouldn't personally put Clarkson as an iffy defender but Niang and probably Ed are atrocious at defense. Rubio is definitely a better defense than Mike. I'm giving Royce a pass cause he always guards the best player on the other team. Bogey doesn't play defense much. Ingles tries but he's gassed.

I actually believe our "x-factor" over our streak was Mudiay. He's not perfect but his midrange is usually money. He's definitely stronger than Conley and gets paid like 25x less. He was really starting to look great out there and now Joe and him are playing really poorly since Mike came back

The simple explanation is that when Rudy is off the floor, our defense goes to ****. We desperately need a defensively capable backup 5. That has to be item no. 1.

Last year we had both Favors and Udoh. Now we've got a big gaping hole. Ed is undersized at 6'10" and under 220 lbs.

Item number 2 has to be Georges Niang. Yes, he shoots 3s like he's Matt Bonner, but he's defensively challenged. NBA athletes can just run by him. He's taking minutes that were going to Jae Crowder. He shoots better than Jae, but he's not the tough, high-energy, physical defender that Jae was to say the least.

Right now, the Jazz actually have too many offensive-minded players who want the ball, but a few of them don't defend. Niang is one-dimensional.

Mudiay is a limited player. Once we got Clarkson to drive the ball, we didn't need Mudiay to take shots. I like the way Mudiay rebounds though.

The postgame show is talking about how Mike Conley took 20 shots tonight, while Joe had only 2 shots in 28 minutes. That's what happens when you take the ball out of Joe's hands and make him the 5th option.

There's been all this talk about how much better Joe is as a starter but that was with Royce in the starting 5 instead of Conley. I honestly don't think he's going to be very effective in the starting lineup with Conley. We're going to take the ball out of his hands and he's not going to get very many shots or get to run very many pick and roll's with Rudy. If we had a big off the bench that was a good pick and roll finisher for him to play with we'd probably be better off putting him back on the bench and Royce back in the starting lineup.

One thing has to be pointed out - NBA, stop treating Donovan like a 2 way player. Your ******** star treatment babies guys like Harden, Lillard, wings all over the NBA. Refs cater to stars all over the league but not Donovan Mitchell. The guy attacks the rim relentlessly through all sorts of contact.

Vs Portland 0 FT
Vs Denver 2 FT

Donovan averages 4.6 FT attempts per game. Doncic 9. Trae Young 8.8.

Give us the same luxury of star treatment NBA. For **** sake. Bail us out like you do stars all over the rest of the league.

Sorry, rant over.

Conley blows. He’s virtually no threat out there. He isn’t that quick and has no size so no defender needs to help out on him thus leaving no one wide open for threes really. Christ, the guy couldn’t even make a wide open layup in the 4th.

Regarding dodo’s Mitchell rant. Spare me. The guy is the only explosive nba athlete I’ve ever seen who’s a complete tard and doesn’t know how to jump off of one foot and attack the rim. Neither he nor anyone else on the team is really a threat in this regard.

The issue here is clearly on the defensive end. As many have pointed out we just don’t have enough good defenders on the team, and don’t really even have a good go-to 5 man lineup when we need defensive stops.

I also worry about the fit with Ingles and Conley. I definitely agree that we need a big off the bench that Ingles run the pick n roll with.

The Deseret News said the Jazz gave up three runs in the First, second and third quarters totaling 40-0. That is a big hole to climb out of. It was like when we were down to Toronto by 40 at half around Christmas.

Really hard to believe that Conley's the one taking the rap around here again when he held McCollum to fourteen, scored 22 of his own on an efficient 9 for 20, had four assists (same as Mitchell) and four boards which was more than either Ingles, Bogdanovic or Mitchell.
We got manhandled last night and it had nothing whatsoever to do with Conley. The questions we need to be asking are: Why are our players afraid to put a body on a Lillard, a Whiteside, a Little or an Anthony? Why is it our starting forwards can't get more than three rebounds combined in twenty eight minutes? Why is our two time DPOY, Allstar Center getting destroyed by a retread fill-in?

Haven't watched the game was enjoying a Sunday session down at the social club, probably won't watch it either who needs that sort of depression in their lives?

Dodo? Lol.

Mitchell doesn't get to the line as much as other guys who actually drive less than he does. More free throw attempts are deserved ESPECIALLY if other guys are getting calls for the same thing.

I don't know why I'm wasting my time with somebody who just wants to whine. About Conley. Mitchell. People who post.

Okay, Dodo.

The reality is Utah is in a position to fix mostly what ails them thru EFFORT. The offense is very good sometimes other worldly, the defense is exactly the opposite. Throughout the losing streak and sometimes even when the Jazz were winning, the defense beyond Rudy is bad; really bad. Rebounding is also terrible; like other than Rudy, almost non existent excluding Bradley. Typically there's at least two Jazz players who are close to the basket that when the shot goes up, they wait for Rudy to get it all the while not bothering to put a body on anyone. It's a disgrace and coaching has to start focusing on rebounding, closing to shooters, etc. You miss assignments, you sit. Bojan is a bad defender but if he worked harder could be a lot better, same with rebounding. Not much you can do with Niang, he works hard, but is just a horrific athlete. Donovan and Clarkson play hard on defense on their guy, but frequently get burned on backcuts or runouts. I believe it was against the Rockets, but the Jazz had one offensive rebound with under four minutes left. Also, Gordon and Tucker were getting rebounds over/between three Jazz people. Blaming Conley for everything is ridiculous. Everyone can look in the mirror and find the perfect place to start on what to do to be better. Even Rudy; against Portland might be the worst I've ever seen him play for an entire game.

Best lineup right now:

DM
Clarkson
Bojan
Ingles
Rudy

That’s the team we should be closing games with. Conley is just not the right fit for this team. DM and Ingles need the ball in their hands.

I would have Oneal instead of Clarkson.
