What's new

Jazz draft Keyonte George at 16

quentin grimes as a freshman 49% TS. second year in the league - 62% TS. that's basically the first dude i remembered. took me about 30 seconds to find that.

(edit) second guy i looked at - Tyrese Maxey - 53% TS, second year in the league 59% TS, third year 61% TS.

Cam Reddish 49% TS, third year in the leauge 56% TS - that isn't a great number (though it's fine), but it's a huge improvement. George improves that much, he's in the 58-59% range.

immanuel quickly 54% TS as a frosh, 58% TS in his third season.

i could go on, but the point has been made. these are just dudes i though just off the top of my head and just from the last 3 or 4 drafts. if i did actual research, no doubt there are plenty more.
An important distinction here might be how young they are coming out of college. Or maybe it’s just nonsense.

All I want is for Keyonte and Hendricks to be working on their handle for like an hour and a half every day. Shooting an hour and a half every day. Minimally.

Sidy was the unity pick. I know it’s BPA blah blah blah but we seriously got 0 passing and perimeter defense which were some of the Jazz’s most glaring issues last year.

Sidy looks sick. Like a 6’8” Dwyane Wade. Just attacks and is thick and goes at the rim.

You're really missing the point if you think I'm saying he'll turn into Don.
I get it.

Ainge also drafted Romeo Langford in the same range in 2019. Like every other FO guy he also makes mistakes in the draft. As a Jazz fans all we can do is hope this kid pans out.

All 3 of the kids they drafted can shoot the rock. Ainge clued us in during his post season presser their #1 area of concern was shooting and they certainly addressed it in this draft.

His measurements were a bit disappointing (he wasn’t quite that big), but he has some real connector/maybe even point forward chops and he competes hard on both sides of the ball. The shot isn’t broken but it’s farther away than most. He would’ve rounded out our draft nicely.

the original point was that we need to be careful to take too much from what an 18 year old does in college. so regardless of how old they were when they came out, if they struggled with their efficiency when they were 18, it doesn't mean they still can't be really good and efficient nba players

Truthfully I'm really not all that high on Keyonte, mostly because I don't like drafting a dude with the idea of turning him into something he doesn't seem to be (a PG) - I just prefer good-faith arguments over pretending that a player's scoring efficiency is locked in from his freshman year of college.

gobert and top 10 player don’t even belong in the same novel, let alone same sentence. So I’d you’ve ever said it, your player evaluation option to me means doo doo

I mean, all you gotta do is watch what kind of shots he was taking to get how poor the efficiency was. Combine that with the ankle injury absolutely tanking his performance (at the worst time) with age, that some of those crazy shots can just be weeded out, and he will just get better, and you can come to a damn rosy conclusion.

I will say that I want a highlight reel to pop. I want the player to jump off the screen. George is tier 1 in this class for that. And the off-the-dribble 3 efficiency is VERY exciting.

Unfortunately Keyonte is nowhere as athletic as Don. He doesn't have the explosiveness of Don. He doesn't have Don's first step ability to get his shoulder past his defender. He certainly can't finish at the rim like Don. He doesn't even have the passing ability of Don. I'll just call him overweight, unathletic Don. Bottomline he can't be compared to guys like Don, Lavine or Fox who all had super athleticism coming out of college.

I think in 2-3 years we might all be regretting they passed on JHS who the Lakers snapped up with the very next pick. To me JHS has the more modern NBA game especially with his advanced floater shot and passing skill. We shall see.
He is right there athletically with Don.

College Freshman Year TS% and EFG%:

Keyonte George: 54.0% / 48.3%
Donovan Mitchell: 52.7% / 48.9%

In case anybody's wondering.

The interesting thing with Donovan was that I thought he could improve his efficiency by taking better shots. To some degree that probably happened, but mostly he just got better at making difficult shots.

It was a little crazy to me that Sidy lasted so long. I though he looked like a guy who could come in and be part of a rotation right away.

Point guard in today's nba is a very loose term. In the past the pg dominated the ball and broke down the defense to create spacing. In this current era with built in spacing you don't need those same vision or passing chops. I view him in the same type of pg mold as Mitchell when he was asked to play that role.
