Jazz Free Agency Summer of 2018

Burks has negative value in a trade
I wouldn't say that. Burks played well against Houston and before his injuries he average about 14 pts a game. If you use the same argument than Parker value isn't very high. He hasn't really proven he was the player before injuries.

Ok, where is my logic flawed here?

Imo this is the year we need to be looking to add good, quality, players on bargain deals. It’s a depressed market and that’s when a team like us should be looking to take advantage.

Next year a lot of teams will have money and I simply don’t see us luring a big name player in that climate. But when we have a roster full of ultra valuable contracts that are tradeable, while having helped us win over the previous 1-2 years span, we are in a really enviable position and able to use those assets to get a true 3rd piece.

Totally spit balling here but I think this off-season is actually a good environment for a team like us to take advantage of.

That is where I’ve gotten... we need to open up at least two roster spots and if we retain favs on a bargain deal then his trade value will help. Either let Neto go, release one of thabo or ekpe and dangle the MLE... but only on a multi year deal with team options.

Yep the George Hill that helped lead our team to break a playoff drought and a first-round win? Yeah I meant that one.

Definitely not saying we should throw any first in a S&T for Jabari, just think the notion that we are giving away first round picks is really ignorant.

Well the first round picks for Bell was DeMurray the starting PG for the Spurs and a candidate for all NBA. Rubio 1st resulted in Prince who is the 3&D player the Jazz are still trying to get. He shot 38 percent from 3pt with over 450 attempts. Average 14 pts 4.7 rebounds 2.8 assists in his second year with above average defense. The kid plays hard and improved a lot from his rookie year. He has Jazz DNA in him.

All I am saying is many on this board just throw in 1st round picks like they don't matter. I see most teams putting in second round picks. The only time one should put in a first is if the trade is slanted towards your team. I don't think trading for Parker warrants a 1st round pick.

The only issue is finding targets... if Favs walks Jerami Grant on a MLE for a few years is valuable 4/5.

I’m not on the Mario bandwagon.

Seth Curry would be good but we have Grayson coming in.

KCP Tyreke and Avery Bradley don’t really have Jazz DNA.

Bjelica is old so not sure I’m down with a multi year deal. Same thing with Mbah a Moute.

Hood would be a great candidate if it weren’t for his history here.

Trying to find that buy low guy is rough.

@ Bodhi

You are correct. Thats what I've been saying all off-season. We have to take advantage of this buyers market.

#1 - we need to decline Thabo.

#2 - hope Favors gets some silly deal elsewhere so we don't have to keep debating his value every stinking year.

#3 - go shopping with our space. Be willing to take a bad two year deal if the asset is worth it.

Be aggressive.

Joe Harris might be a good one to get and could be had at MLE... but he can’t play the 4 at all... so just a 2/3.

But we can shop with the MLE and keep the NG guys. I think Favs might sign the best value contract of anyone... if we keep him we can waive Udoh and Jonas (if we kept Thabo).

I agree we should decline Thabo but he was much better than crowder when healthy... I just worry this last injury did him in.

In a lot of ways not having space is better in negotiations... if you have 12M in space a guy that might get MLE will want all the space instead. The delta is where the value is.

What about Bertans? Jazz are rumored to be interested.

If we decline Thabo, let Favors walk, and re-sign Exum before July 6, we would have the ability to make some deals using the space + Burks. We could take $25 million in a deal.

We can't be as opportunistic if we dont have cap space. We would be in the same boat as everybody else who is capped out.

There isn’t a lot of guys I’d want on long deals... Ariza and JJ are like a 1-2 years away from being done... I like Rudy Gay but only on a 1+1 deal.

Not really because most capped teams won’t use the MLE or BAE. We can shop without a huge need. Collecting that value and the differing contract amounts allows you to do in season trades... easier to pull off and where there will be more bargains... if clips suck there is a chance you could get Harris... same with Niko... Magic have buyers remorse on Gordon... porter get moved. Having the depth allows us to facilitate deals and not fit the roster.

Good teams are going to feast on these cheap deals. The Warriors, Houston, etc are going to be ridiculously stacked because really good players are going to take a cheap one year deal to chase a title then get paid next summer.

This is our opportunity. Take advantage of the arrogant Lakers

Maybe... I think they’d be better off stretching him... they can get to 67M that way... can sign LBJ and PG... might hamper them going for Kawhi next year. We also don’t have space to just take him... so I’m sure they’d call Atlanta, Sacramento, and Indiana first... maybe Chicago

I’d offer Ball as the sweetener instead of Kuzma.

LA would be wiser to trade Deng than stretching him. $7.5 million a year for 5 years is a lot of money. Sure, they would be able to give LBJ his $35 and PG his $30, but like us, but they wouldn't be able to add another full max guy next summer. That money would torture them for years.
