What's new

Jazz Free Agency Summer of 2018

Agreed. I think Favors and the Jazz have a pretty comfortable relationship and both are happy. Favors only issue his lack of a long range shot. If he improves it, he'll have value beyond his prime. I don't know how to address the situation really. I love Favors and love what he brings to the Jazz and would be very happy if they resigned him for a reasonable deal. But if Derrick got an obscene offer from another team, then I sure as hell wouldn't begrudge him that.

This is how I see Derrick Favors:
+ incredible teammate
+ loves Utah and being a Jazzman
+ pretty good PF and back up C
- not a consistent offensive threat
- cannot spread the floor
- injury concerns as he ages
- questions about his effectiveness alongside Gobert against small, elite lineups

I want him back for a ton of money for one year or a lowball, frontloaded number for any kind of long term deal.

I think it's very possible Exum takes the QO.

I think it is unlikely. I think we will give him $8-12M per year on a multi year deal... at least 2 years... maybe 4. He'd have to kill it to make big money next year and risks injury killing all that. He's lost 2 of his 4 years so far... another injury and he gets the minimum. If he took QO I think its a sign he'd be out and I'm not sure why we invest the playing time and development energy on him.

When he came into those negotiations I think I'd bring up Rodney Hood's name 50 times... How quickly would DL signed a 4/40 last year if Hood would have accepted it? In Duncan's podcast he took the QO... sad.

Gortat traded for Rivers... Deandre Jordan must be gone... either via trade or opt out. OK maybe not but Doc traded his son... and the Wizards decide to alleviate their locker room issues by getting Austin Rivers... super smart... everyone loves that kid.

Clips take on an extra $1M... a sign they will cut salary elsewhere... Deandre trade or opt out or declining Beverly's option (they have a thousand guards... I guess one less now.)

A marriage of convenience is fine if your happy winning 50 games a year to go along with 2nd round exits. To beat the elite of the west though your team cannot have an ounce of fat on the bone.

So you continue the marriage until Kate Upton takes you up on your engagement offer.

Makes the Wizards look even dumber for drafting a wing who is a total project over an athletic rim protector/rim runner like Robert Williams.

I think that Williams kid is bad news... I get a Whiteside vibe.

Bigs may end up being cheap this summer... might end up with a good starter at the minimum. Part of my mind went LoPo mode when I saw this and I mentally started doing a sign and trade of Favs and stuff for Porter.

I wouldn't give Favors a multiyear offer. I like the guy a lot but we need flexibility in 2019. If we strike out on the big names in FA this summer I'd offer him a 1 year deal at big money.

The Gortat for Rivers trade makes sense. The Clippers are trying really, really hard to tell DeAndre Jordan to just decline his deal. If DeAndre Jordan walks away from 1 year $24 million, it could be the dumbest move in the history of contracts. I don't know who gives him half of that in free agency unless it's Dallas after they strike out on Cousins, Capella and others.

Dallas would (I mean half that not 24M)... I mean it is likely that Capella would just get matched and DMC may stay (his deal is scary).

Yeah... it would be dumb... I think they trade him if he opts in though... then he has no control.

Giving Exum $12M/yr would be incredibly dumb. In the 538 stats I just posted, he's projected for ~1 WAR. Obviously, those #s aren't perfect, but Dante is much closer to being a sunk cost at this point than a $12M/yr player.

Danny Green just opted into $10M for the last year of his contract rather than test the market this offseason. Exum hasn't come close to Danny's level of play for any sustained period of time.

Horrible trade. Washington making out like bandits. I know he’s not GM anymore, but trading your son for garbage? Yikes.

I really hope Dallas trades for or signs Jordan. I think he's awful and pretty ineffective when it matters in the playoffs. An old Dirk, a 2nd year slasher, a rookie wing, Wes Matthews and limited/aging DJ don't scare me.

At this rate, I should probably hope for the following:
- Dallas overpays for Jordan
- Houston overpays for Capella
- NOLA overpays for Cousins
- Somebody overpays for Jabari
- We don't overpay for Favors

I actually like Rivers to Wizards, but I like interesting story lines. Does that mean Beal or Porter are out?

As for the Clippers I think cutting Teledosich (sp?) saves them 4 Million, and I don't see him coming back.

I like Gortat to the Clippers too. By trading Rivers, they take the personal out of the equation. Now, they don't have to worry about re-signing him, rebuilding, etc. Gortat will receive a paycheck and will get traded if it helps the team. Past that, he's just going to walk in 12 months. If the Clippers getting Gortat makes DJordan do something stupid, it's an amazing trade.

Teodosic is all but gone from LA. He's going to be yet another underpaid player this summer because not many can spend.
