3. Utah Jazz

Key additions: Al Jefferson (trade), Raja Bell (FA), Gordon Hayward (draft)

Key subtractions: Carlos Boozer, Kyle Korver, Wesley Matthews

Perhaps the best way to sum up the Jazz's summer is to say they swapped Boozer for Jefferson. As my colleague John Hollinger pointed out this summer, the Jazz probably came out ahead on that deal. Not only is Jefferson younger than Boozer, he also can play center and makes less money.

The team also lost sharpshooters Korver and Matthews, critical swingmen for them. Bell will help, but the long-term hope is that Hayward becomes a star.

The selection of Hayward wasn't popular in Utah, but he's got enormous potential. He's a better athlete and shooter than fans give him credit for and he's wiry tough. He may not play a lot this season, but in the long term he should be a critical part of the Jazz's future.

Grade: B+

I think calling Matthews a "sharpshooter" is an exagerration. Jefferson gives us somebody in there who will challenge shots more than Booze. I think we could have even been No. 1 on the list. OKC was number 1 for essentially resigning Durrant (of course this is big to keep him in OKC) and Sacramento was 2 mainly for Cousins (they better hope he does not end up being a head case).

I think calling Korver a "sharpshooter" is an exagerration. He made 1.1 three-pointers per game (59 makes in 52 games). I think a B+ is about right. Jazz now have a low-post player. I just hope Bell's second stint with Utah proves more successful than when the Jazz brought back Howard Eisley.

I'm still curious what contracts the Jazz would have had to take on to move up and get Cousins in the draft (I'd prefer him to Big Al). Had they been able to do that, the Boozer trade exception could have been used to get a new wing player and/or the money saved to re-sign Wes. I'd trade Raja, Big Al and Hayward for Wes, Cousins and change.

With that said, given what the Jazz had to work with (Boozer's defection, Wes's offer from the Blazers), the Jazz FO did a spectacular job this offseason. B+ seems appropriate.

Prefer Cousins to Big Al???? blwwhahahahahahahahahahahwlhwlahahhahahahahahha!!!!!!!!
That's like saying you would prefer to date your cousin instead of a hot 20 year old babe.

Did you go from pot to crack?

Younger, better size (a large 5 v. a small 5), better J, better defensive potential (and roughly equal conditioning). The Jazz aren't winning the next couple years anyway. I'd roll the dice.

Bwhwhahahahahahahaha

Please refer to my edit of my last post.

Big Al is 25 and is one of 4 active guys in the NBA to have a season where he averaged 21 and 11. Cousins hasn't played a minute in the NBA and has been known to have attitude problems and you wanted to roll the dice with him and Sloan over a proven/young stud like Jefferson? Jefferson was born to play in a system like Jazz's. This is almost as good as you saying the Lopez twins would suck in the NBA.

How many times have we seen players dominate in summer league and then struggle in the NBA?
Cousins has a lot of potential. He might become a great player. But then again, he might not. Given the choice, right now, I'd take Jefferson. We know Al can average 20/10 against NBA-caliber centers. We know Cousins can average 18/11 against D-leaguers and fellow rookies. We also knwo Jefferson WANTS to play for Utah; wants to play for a coach like Sloan, who is going to push him. Let's see what kind of stats Cousins is able to put up against real NBA players.

We've all been wrong before. It looks like I was very wrong about Brook Lopez. Big deal.

Attitude problems? Overblown. Dude's a competitor, and Sloan would love him.

Jefferson is a great low post player, but we've yet to see how he'll make reads with the ball in his hands (read: Find cutters/shooters). He may be a black hole. Further, his conditioning has been too poor in the past to allow him to get out and run, negating many potential easy buckets for his team and creating easy buckets for opponents. Finally, dude is an atrocious defender. I'm hopeful his conditioning will be good, and he'll be committed to learning the system and playing D, but we'll have to wait and see, just as we'd have to wait and see with Cousins (who has played as many minutes for the Jazz as Big Al, last I checked).

So, you always take the proven player over the rookie? Seems pretty ****ing retarded to me.

He didn't really dominate in Summer League though (except on the boards). Big Al is another tweener, and doesn't solve the Jazz's need for a big body with some defensive aptitude in the post. Like I said, taking their respective contracts into account (4 year rookie deal >> 3 years $42mil), I roll the dice on Cousins (again, depending on what the Jazz would have had to give up and take on). Most of the time I agree with the Jazz's conservative approach, but as we've seen with Deron, Sometimes you have to take a gamble.

What if your cousin is a hot 20yr old babe? That is perfectly acceptable is some parts of the country. See West Virginia. (alright anybody from WV just kidding!)

Was it really a gamble to give up a 6th and 27th pick (and another one) to get a 3rd pick? Not on my court.

Utah didn't have picks to throw around, and they probably didn't want an injured Okur or AK.

In this case, I think that what Utah would have had to give up wouldn't have been worth it.

Cousins sure did look good in the Summer League. Some questions were answered there.
I'm always curious what deals are on the table that are close, but never get done.

It's not like the Jazz didn't try to get Cousins. Every indication at the time of the draft was that he was the guy the Jazz wanted, and that they tried their pants off to move up and draft him. What can you do? It's hard to lament a missed opportunity when it was only a remote possibility to begin with. It's not as if there have been reports that said "Deal X was on the table and the Jazz turned it down."

Get over it.

Harsh for you.

With Boozer and Okur, we had no real inside. Despite weighing 265, Boozer was a finesse player, opting for jump shots. Okur stayed outside the paint offensively, rarely posting up.
Jefferson's inside game will change the way opponents have to defend us. That will greatly increase our open shots from outside the paint. He is way better than a tradeoff over Boozer. Hayward will be a very good offensive player, much better than Matthews. And, he'll have Raja Bell to show him defense. Raja + Hayward is also an upgrade over Matthews and Korver. Korver now is about as good as he's gonna get.
So, B+ sounds about right.

Holy hell, archie FINALLY said something that makes sense.
