#UtahJazz expected to officially hire Johnnie Bryant as skills coach. Bryant has already been added to staff, according to Paul Millsap.

Bryant played at the University of Utah and has been Millsap's personal trainer for several years. Bryant is highly respected within the regional basketball community and has worked with everyone from Ronnie Price and C.J. Miles to Deron Williams.

Smart move by Jazz with Bryant hire. Young, hard-working skills guru who can push players. Also gives Millsap an ally in organization.

So is this a sign that Millsap is in the long term plans of the Jazz?

It sounds like the Jazz are trying to give Millsap reasons to stay here (other than $). On a side note, are you the dma that posts/has posted on the ESPN Jazz forums?

Interesting. Thanks!

Is it just me or are there starting to be an aweful lot of Jazz coaches and assistants? Did the Jazz always keep a minimal staff and they are now catching up to the NBA norm? Or will this create unessesary management and muddle things up?

I think the Jazz have kept a minimal staff and are catching up.

Yay

He must be why Deron won the skills competition.

It's my belief that the Jazz want to keep Millsap. They just aren't sure if they can. I think Al is still around as insurance just in case we can't sign him. That's why the Jazz already tried to extend him with what they could. I don't remember Al getting any attention offers.

The only thing that I don't is, why does Al still get treated as an untouchable on the court.

I heard Johnnie Bryant on one of the local radio shows about his summer camps and basketball skills camps but had no idea he had any involvement witht he Jazz, cool to hear for sure. Obviously helps to have Millsap as an example of work (although Millsap is obviously a hard worker) and so the repoire with Millsap should help ease the transition a little. Also being a young guy he can still relate to the players and that can't hurt.

I saw Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap both working out at the U basketball courts with Bryant multiple times during the lockout. Johnnie Bryant is a great guy and will be able to connect well with the players on the team.

Solid move, front office.

I'm reminded of the 4ot game in Atlanta. All those assistant coaches, but still it was Al and Milsap dragging up the floor, with multiple fouls, and tired while a fresh Derrick Favors sat on the bench. Jazz can hire as many assistants as they need to make sure that crap never happens again.

Yeah after the first 2 OTs I was flipping out. That was so frustrating to watch. Just think what was running thru Favors head.

jazz haven't had a "minimal" staff... they've just had a lot of guys that aren't necessarily in the limelight a lot. i don't know that they've had anyone who was a "skills" coach per se, but there have always been a lot of guys dedicated to helping the players get better.

True but none of these reports indicate that they are replacing someone that left or was fired. It seems in addition to what they already have.

Only person to leave was Layden and he was replaced. The Jazz have added 4 coached, FO personel and lost 1.

didn't realize he was so young... graduated just 4 years ago, so when he's working with vets he'll basically be talking to guys who are much older than him. not that that really matters -- when i was 23 i was made the leader of a team that included people aged 20 through 70 and i did fine. just saying, how much credibility will a 26-year-old who played one pro season in germany have with the older guys?

Millsap listens to him so if he's backing him I would guess most of the other players wouldn't have an issue. Plus he's not telling them what to do on the court but more off the court workout and conditioning things right?
