Jazz in 6

If I remember correctly Royce has been battling tendonitis in his knee(s). If you've ever suffered from tendonitis you know how this could slow you significantly. They need to rest him and play him spot minutes according to matchups if at all. The problem being tendonitis doesn't go away without rest. That should be an adequate enough reason to bench him.

The key to winning the rest of the series is limiting Royce’s minutes or taking them away altogether. He’s been our worst defender on the entire team this series.

Ya but what about all the buckets!!!?

he needs to take the open shots. if he can put down the open shot jazz won't lose.

Actually you should look at what royce did game 3 and then look at the result of the game

Brunson is 8/18 against Royce including missing the last shot he took against Royce last game when Royce was pulled. In general the guy Royce is guarding is shooting slightly worse than their expected field goal percentage (Link) . I watched every defensive possession with Royce involved from game 4. He had 3 bad plays. In general Dallas is screening off of Royce in favor of Conley, Mitchell, or Clarkson.

Royce is shooting ok, getting rebounds, assisting, and not turning the ball over (he has the best assist/to ratio on our team). The hyperbole against Royce on this board has gotten crazy.

You should look at his plus minus and offensive and defensive on off and the like.
Worst on the team.
For whatever reason, we are better we his isnt on the court.

I've seen what has been posted. 4 games is a relatively small sample for a stat with the noise of 9 other players. I'm not sure it's possible for a player who is involved as little as Royce is to truly have a large impact, positive or negative.

Look, I truly hate being the resident Royce apologist. He's a very average and very replaceable player. Ideally we would have a true defensive difference maker in Royce's position. I just think the amount of hate he gets is dumb.

I don't see it as hate, as no one has been making slurs or saying bad things about his mama or wanting him dead or anything. I see it as frustration and irritation, mostly at Snyder, that they apparently cannot see that he isn't giving us what we need in the position. I like Royce and I felt that last year he was a difference-maker in his way. But this year he has slipped for real. He is neither the 3, nor the D, we need in that role. And it is frustrating to see him getting so much time over even a Paschall who at least brings some energy to the game, and especially House who really just needs time in the system to far exceed what Royce has fallen to this year, or sometimes even Juancho who has length and isn't afraid to shoot the 3 and, again, plays with a lot more energy.

The ratio of negative comments about Royce vs actual negative impact is off the charts, whatever you want to call it. If Royce has a bad play, there are 20 posts about it in the game thread.

I missed the last 3 quarters of game 4 and read through the game thread before watching the replay. Based on the posts I thought Royce must have been awful, so I was looking for it the whole time I watched the replay. He made the right play 95% of the time, he had some great passes, and timely rebounds. He missed a couple of shots, had 3 bad defensive possessions, but was mostly fine.

Yeah, my eye test says Royce isn't that bad.
He certainly isn't very impactful out there, but I don't believe his play is costing the Jazz as much as the plus/minus indicates.

And he hit a basket that clinched Game 1 for us, so he deserves more props for that than I've seen given.

I think part of the problem is exactly that the eye test doesn't show anything egregious, but the stats show a very bad performance. To me this means he just kind of isn't doing anything. Can't have bad plays if your plays are pretty uneventful in the first place. Seems to be just coasting and not really applying himself imo. This is why I have wondered (and posted it before) if he is nursing an injury. We know he had tendonitis problems earlier in the year, are they just nagging and lingering? If so that could very well affect his play in general and maybe he needs a few games off to heal. idk, either way his advanced stats for the series are pretty bad, all things considered.
