They are putting 100 million into Vivint, they just put the team into a trust (only major American sports team), they run the largest youth basketball league in the nation, etc.
Jesus christ they could sell the team, let it become the Sonics, and make a BILLION DOLLARS. You sound absolutely ridiculous when you try to paint them as owners that only care about money.
They put the team into a trust so they wouldn't have to pay the taxes on the team when Gail dies. It saved them about 200 million dollars. Yeah, they are putting 100 million into Vivint, but SLC has given them plenty of tax breaks to help offset the costs. Also, they own Vivint, so it's not like the upgrades are hurting them. They will make 10 times that off concerts all summer long, Jazz games all winter long, rodeos, etc.
Larry said his greatest regret was not paying money to bring someone in to help John and Karl.
The Jazz held onto Al and Paul to try to make one more playoff run (ie, make some more money) before they tanked.
I'm glad you think they are some benevolent ownership group. That's great.
Did you know they have had laws passed that do not allow other car dealerships to be open 7 days a week, because they don't want to be open 7 days a week?
What about when the Utah Red Zone started taking money out of their pockets? Did they get better, invite the competition and let the best man win? Nope, they went to the legislature to have the stores shut down, which they will be once the leases run up.
The Millers are all about the Millers. They are also PR geniuses. It's admirable.
Don't kid yourself. The Jazz can still be sold. They Jazz aren't any more stuck in Utah now then they were before the trust. The Millers still make millions off the Jazz every year (look at who the board is who runs the trust. What?!? It's mostly Miller kids?????). All the trust did was relieve the Millers of about a 200 million dollar tax bill when Gail dies.
So, yeah, they can still sell the team, but they never will because they own the arena and their whole business model is focused around the Jazz. If they sold the Jazz, every other arm of Miller Corp would suffer drastically.
NOW, none of this is bad. The Millers have every right to do what they are doing and are smart to do what they are doing.
BUT, they aren't sacrificing dollars to make a winner here. They've proven that time and time again.
Their goal is to make money. And making the playoffs with a payroll that sits under the salary floor...Man, the Jazz were successful this year. This may be the most successful year of the Jazz ever.
