Jazz need shooters desperately

The game is rapidly evolving. It's all about quickness and getting people open to shoot. And the Jazz simply don't have many knockdown shooters. Jingling is about the only one. Both Mitchell and Crowder are volume shooters -- they can make tough shots from outside when contested but their percentages are low. Neither Exum nor Ricky can shoot unless they're wide open. Favors is below average. Burks is a scorer and only an average outside shooter. Grayson and Niang are good shooters but not there yet and it remains to be seen how good they will be. Neto and Udoh are end of the bench players, and Thabo looks like he is on his last legs. This is not a team that will go far in the new NBA game. They are built for defense, but with the speed game, it's difficult to set up your defense and play to Rudy's strengths.

More shooters yes. But i can't stress enough how much I'm disappointed with Niang and Allen. They are supposed to be the shooters on this team, and that's all they're supposed to do.

this is really unfair, especially to allen. he's gotten mostly garbage minutes and at least has hit some threes here and there both in regular play and garbage time although his percentages aren't there yet. jumper is beautiful and always looks like it will go in, he just needs time on the floor to find rhythm. he's a rookie for Christ's sake who has played in only about 10 games.

With regard to Niang... he’s shooting just under 40%. I’m surprised it is that high. Do you know how hard it is to come into a game off the bench and shoot well in a small 4-5 minute stint. Really tough to get a rythymn.

Hello Mr. Allen.

After 17 games (source basketreference)

Team shooting :

- 2P% is 53.6%. The best ever for any Jazz team. Last year : 51.5%
- 3P% is 32.8%. The worst since the 2004-05 season. Last year : 36.6%
- FT% is 71.0%. The worst ever for any Jazz team. Last year : 77.9%

Opponent shooting :
- 2P% is 53.5%. The worst ever for any Jazz team. Last year : 48.8%
- 3P% is 35.6%. Good. Last year : 36.5%
- FT% is 73.2%.

Analysis :
- expected improvement in FT% and 3P%
- the new rule "clear path" seems to hurt the team a lot. Last year, the 2P% defense was one of the best. This year, it's the opposite.

great post. FT shooting is much more concerning to me given how often they've gotten to the line. They've lost 2-3 games at the FT line.

my point exactly from what I originally posted above, but apparently I'm Mr Allen himself. it's crazy that niang's % is that high since he's only made like one 3 in the last 4-5 games.

They should trade up for Garland if they aren't in range. He's not only a great shooter but his release is LIGHTNING quick... I think he'd steal the starting spot right away. His affect on the overall floor spacing would be huge.

this kid everything they thought Trey Burke would be and more.

Lol, some of you have such short memories. Niang couldn't miss to start the year.

And blaming Niang and Allen for our shooting woes when they get DNP's or <5 minutes a night is some next level ****** analysis.
^This! And welcome ETX. If you’re a long time lurker you know it takes thick skin in many cases to post here. A lot of self proclaimed geniuses here, but overall a really fun forum! To expect any rookie to step in and be a knock down shooter is pretty unreasonable, especially given limited minutes. I think they’ll both be fine with proper development, but I actually like Grayson’s chances more than Niang’s. His athleticism will be a huge help.

Wonder if fatigue has anything to do with the poor FT shooting. The pace of some of these games is like lightning. And I think the scouting report on us is to run and attack, leaving Rudy behind them so he can't protect the rim.

I hated the Grayson pick. I'm fine with what I've seen so far. We kinda knew the defense was gonna be rough... he has had some moments where he was okay on that end. His shot is smooth and I trust it.

Both guys should be given a pass until the get some extended burn. When a guy comes off the bench and knows he is only playing a couple minutes... that first shot is almost always a miss. We really need to let them play through a couple cold streaks imo. When they consistently throw up an 0-5 when getting 15-20 real minutes we can worry.

Nah... just mental. 3 point percentage might be affected by tired legs... free throws though... I really don't think so.

In his post game interview last night Mitchell eluded to just that. Teams were pushing it and we weren’t adjusting as well as we could. I believe that’s exactly the problem but the best counter is to hit shots, and that just isn’t happening. The threes are almost always a long rebound and the other team is off in transition. We really need a remedy for the transition d.

We should go rescue Hill from the Cavs... make up the bad feelings... and play the slow it down murder ball we used to. Grizz are still doing it. It worked for us.
