Jazz Offseason Plan

There are three guys with Aussie ties that the Jazz are cogitating on. Jarrell Martin is playing SL and was a first round pick of the Griz in 2015. John Mooney worked out for the Jazz and is playing Summer League for the Bucks. He lead the Aussie league in rebounding and is a Jack Cooley with talent as he went to Notre Dame also. Jock Landale is a pal of Ingles and is on the Australian Olympic team. All three had similar stats in the Aussie pro league this past year.

Jazz could discuss a sign-and-trade for Bobby Portis with the Bucks. Not sure if he's our guy, but I'd put it on the table as an option.

Both Portis and Lauri Markkanen could be sign-and-trade options depending on who the Jazz are willing to give up.

We would really pass on getting two useful players when we are so thin? And draft assets even if minor?

We could try to flip Thad for help elsewhere.

We need 20-25 minutes from one of those types of guys… having both is not ideal and only helps us if there is an injury imo. I wouldn’t trade Bogey for either straight up. Bogey ain’t perfect but I think he’s getting really under rated by all of us on the board. Ain’t worried about age with him at all. He’s been durable and seemed to finally be 100% end of last year. Was good in the playoffs. He’s not untouchable but if we move him I want it to be a deal we get 125% of perceived value and not 75%. We might get away with using taxpayer MLE to supplement our needs and I would ideally like to add that with Bogey rather than open another hole.

If I'm them, I'm signing them right away before they get pulled... if that's the number.
Forrest can be retained on another two way… so he may wait. I’m not sure where Brantley’s number really is. If he and the Jazz have had a dialogue he may wait… maybe they’d be willing to go multiple years if he shows well in SL. He may have some demand.

I’m taking that deal immediately if I’m Brantley. He’s 25 with almost no NBA experience. Depending on what happens with Niang UTA might be a good shot at minutes too.

Haven't followed this thread, but ... what happened with fan favorite Otto Porter? Can he be had for the TPMLE?

Also, I just thought of something - we dumped Favors before the start of the new fiscal year, right? Does that mean we avoid paying tax for the previous year? I think we were slightly above the tax before that trade?

That's an interesting thought. If true, that Favors trade was a MUCH bigger deal than I originally thought. I'll do some research on it.

This would delay the Jazz falling into Repeater territory. Good move if true.

Answer on this one appears to be NO unfortunately:

Teams pay an incremental tax rate based on their team salary as of the team's last regular season game, and whether the team is a "repeat offender," i.e., whether they were also taxpayers in at least three of the four previous seasons (not including the previous season):

It's based on the salary of the last regular season game, not the end of the fiscal year.

Nope… not how it works. Tax is determined and snapshot is taken towards the end of the year.

A few guys to keep an eye on for the Jazz as trade possibilities: Nance, Portis, Markannen
Why are we focusing on bigs again? We need a long defensive wing more than any big. In previous years everybody was drooling over Otto Porter. Why not try him now when his value is actually at its lowest? I wanted Batum last year, now he might actually be expensive... but he is another one we should be looking at with our MLE. Who else?

The Jazz have several guys who can play at the 3 and almost no one who can play at the 4. If the Jazz can bring in a tough, two-way 4/5, that lets Royce play at the 3. If there's a compelling two-way player on the wing, then fine, but I don't think OPJ is it.

From what I saw last year, OPJ's injuries have rendered him a shell of his former self. Bulls were a playoff-competitive team, and OPJ was just coasting.
