Jazz Offseason Plan

I also noticed we have a $5MM and $3.5MM trade exception for the Tony Bradley and Ed Davis Trades last year. I'm not sure if that could net us anything. I'm guessing not.

I don't think the Lakers can take someone that has been signed and traded and stay under the hard cap. They want to keep Caruso and THT (who they wouldn't put in the Lowry deal). I think they are out of firsts for a while (with swaps) because of the AD deal.

Could be wrong and it will be close but I think they will need about 12-15M to keep THT and Caruso... then they need to fill out the rest of the roster.

Conley's options are fairly limited imo unless he wants to go to a NY or Miami.
Let's play with the numbers a bit. Lets just say the "hard cap apron" is $145.

Total Lakers Guaranteed - $95
LeBron and AD - $76.5
KCP - $13
Deng - $5 (stretched)

Re-signed guys - $15
Let's say THT and Caruso take up $15 total

That's 5 guys taking up $110

Let's just say they traded Kuzma ($13), Harrell ($9.7) and Gasol ($2.7) - TOTAL $25.5
for
Conley ($15?) and Favors ($9.7) - TOTAL $24.7

That's almost the same amount of money. Of course Conley could take a little less or a little more.

TOTAL for Lakers after the trade is 7 guys at $134.

So the Lakers wouldn't have the MLE, but they could sign 7 minimum contract players and stay under the $145.
Or Harrell exercises his player option which saves LA almost $10 million.
Or the Lakers could look to trade Caldwell-Pope.

How much is it worth it to them to get Conley? Seems that they would be so much better with Conley than Kuzma, Gasol, Harrell, and any MLE player.

Or we could not include Favors...

I mean its close but as soon as they execute the sign and trade with us the teams after THT will increase their offers because they know Lakers will have a limit.

The alternative for them is bringing back Shroeder and not ****ing around with the hard cap... using mini-mle and pivoting later with Kuzma if need be.

They might prefer the hard cap route so that Lebron doesn't want them to spend into oblivion. Harrell can likely be spun into someone's cap with some assets... they could get some late seconds to take the minimum from 1.7 to 900k for a couple guys. I think if they bring Conley in then you keep Gasol but that's not like a deal breaker... would just be weird.

It's a weird dynamic for them for sure. I just don't see Schroder staying at all. He turned down a 4 year extension already. And then he kind of bombed in the playoffs. I guess they could sign-and-trade him somewhere which would all but kill the Conley dream.

I just think in all of the scenarios, getting Conley on that roster is better than Schroder, Kuzma, Harrell, and any of their very small contract guys. It's probably wishful thinking to include Favors in the deal.

A perfect world for LA is Harrell using his player option then LA trading us Kuzma and draft picks for Conley. If we could get some lightly protected 2025 1st, could be a golden trade chip down the road.

I think its doable... I wonder if Schroder sees his market and is like "well.... actually can we talk again". I thought it was pretty dumb for him to pass up that money.

I'm not a huge Kuzma fan but there's a case to be made that he could be better here (not a super strong case). If another team offered us something better I'd be willing to substitute him for something else.

Schroder completely blew it. He wanted more from the Lakers and sucked during the playoffs. He will definitely have no leverage.
He's the guy one of these bottom feeders should go for. He was coming back from Covid so not sure how he was supposed to look in the playoffs.

I do think we need to look to open up some playing time for Udoka. Say he is the guy that DL thought... he could show that ability and give us a decent trade chip or an option for the rim protector and roll man if you move on from Gobert at some point in the next 18 months. Its extremely unlikely he shows anything near that ability but you have to give yourself a look. Can save money on Favs spot or get something different.

- Move him for DJJ or Wright.
- Find a taker to absorb most of his deal... Charlotte might do it. OKC would for a price of course... not sure we have what they are after. Maybe NY once they miss on other targets. Maybe SA if they are trying to compete.

I keep beating this drum and I don't even know if the guy is available. For the Lonzo Ball fans... Delon Wright brings a lot of those things you'd want from Lonzo... his price would be so much lower.

I get he doesn't have some upside that Lonzo does but there are no guarantees that potential is realized and he has some warts that could pop back up... I also just don't think the Lonzo deal is remotely possible.

I did notice via Royce's IG story that Mike is still in Utah and was up golfing today with Royce, Georges and one of our training staff coaches today and the past few days. So I'd say if the price is right Mike is fine staying here, it's not as though he jumped on a private jet and left Utah the next day so he must not mind being here. (We all know the one guy who hopped on a private jet and got outta here ASAP after the season ended, but we won't bother with that here)

As I've said I'm not comfortable with some huge contract with Mike due to his age, size, and injury issues but you almost have to bring him back so you don't lose him for nothing or sign and trade him. Smith did save like $34 million on Donovan's All NBA super max because he didn't make All NBA so he does have money to spend he may not have expected necessarily.

Did Mike skip the last 4 holes due to an injury?

I definitely would be interested in D Wright and Kuzma. Utah roots, affordable, young, athletic, and both have shown they can play defense.

I know defense was a knock against Kuzma earlier in his career, but his defensive analytics from this last season was pretty good. We just need to convince him to get a new hairdo.

We had multiple opportunities to get Delon Weight in the past two years. A guy like him could at least do somewhat of a modest job filling in for Conley when he's recovering his hamstring.

This rumor idea has the Lakers using Kuzma, Harrell and #22 to get Brogdon:

That's two of our potential targets going elsewhere. If the Lakers were off the table, I wonder where Conley looks to next.

I mean this rumors are not substantiated... I don’t even know that Mike wants to go to the Lakers. I’m guessing our first choice would be to retain Conley. I’m guessing we are still high on his list. I wonder if Indiana wants to do a straight swap... if Mike wanted to go home that makes some sense.

I have my doubts on Brogdon but he’s a good substitute if Mike wants out.

I know these are rumors, but this isn't the good ole days when we heard it first when it happens. Nowadays, a thousand ideas will be thrown out there and one will stick. I will say, this trade does make sense for the Lakers.

It also makes sense for Indiana to trade Brogdon. There are a lot of reports that Brogdon isn't well liked, and that Indiana likes the idea of playing LaVert as the primary ball handler.

The last part doesn't make sense - Indiana should be able to get more for Brogdon than Kuzma, Harrell and #22. We would consider that for Conley because he's older and could leave us for nothing. Indiana has no reason to sell low on Brogdon. Somebody would pay more than that.
