So what happens next year if the Jazz are in a similar position, a position it would be in regardless of whether the Jazz keep the pick this year or not? Will you be advocating missing the playoffs AGAIN so that the Jazz can have a draft pick AGAIN?
 
PS, I never argued that the Jazz should strive to finish in 9th place in the West, you are putting words in my mouth.
 
Also, you are assuming that the pick this year will not help the Jazz next year...
that may turn out to be the case, but it is not certain.

Pretty dumb post.
Next year if the jazz make the playoffs they keep thier pick.... totally different situation next year.
I guarantee no one will be wanting the jazz to miss the playoffs next year.

If the Jazz keep their pick this year, no, they won't keep their pick next year if they make the playoffs.
 
the pick is top 14 protected this year, top 12 protected next year, then in 2014 if minny hasn't received the pick then they'll have the right to swap 2014 picks (unless ours is top 9), and if none of those things happen then they get our 2014 second round pick.

which means there's about a 90% chance that the pick will be conveyed this year (if the jazz make the playoffs) or next year (if they make the playoffs or barely miss the playoffs).
 
I think that odds are, most teams that squeak into the playoffs at #8 or #7, do not suddenly become contenders because of that.

in year one? are you kidding? do you know how many rookies at ANY draft position are impact players in year one, let alone how many 12-14 guys are? there is ONE rookie in the top 50 for estimated wins added: kyrie irving at #39, the top pick in the draft. there are only three rookies in the top quartile in the league.

a 12-14 player might become an impact rotation player down the line, but almost zero rookies are able to do it in year one, regardless of draft position.
 
wes matthews did it.
Malone did it.
Stockton did it.
Sam Cassell did it.
Andrei Kirilenko did it.

Besides, you seem to think that a players has to be an allstar to help the team.
The 8th or 12th player can help the team be better if he does a good job with the time he is on the floor..

Also, i am not looking at just one year.
A good pick can pay off for years to come.
 
If the Jazz just won 3 more games this year, they'd have been fighting for 4th instead of 8th.

I have seen many young players come on and help teams win in the playoffs with 10 minutes.

You only want allstars, or impact players, by which I think you mean near all stars.
The guys coming off the bench can make a big difference sometimes.

One good pick might be good enough to be a starter, or a good bench player in limited minutes, and could easily make a difference enough for an extra 3 wins , or even more.
 
Looks like Aldredge is out for the Blazers... we have 2 games remaining with them so that should help our chances. Also if they keep losing they 'could' fall below Golden State but that win against the Warriors the other night doesn't help.

GS needs 1 or 2 wins to stay ahead of the teams below them. Portland has 3 more wins than GS. I haven't been worried about the teams above GS since Portland beat them a few weeks ago.
 
I hope Jefferson Harris Favors and all the rest of them suddenly start putting it all together and dominate the rest of the year, make the playoffs, and keep up the momentum there too. We've seen them do it in stretches, so it is not so far fetched.
I also hope the jazz get the Warriors pick.
If the Jazz don't make the playoffs, I hope they find a good player or 2 in the draft.
 
I just watched the Bulls beat Miami in OT... Asik, Watson, Gibson, all made key plays for the win, and would be welcome additions to a Jazz squad. You can find guys like this even late in a draft, although it is true that these examples all have some years experience.

Houston: Won tiebreaker on season series (2-1)
Denver: Won tiebreaker on season series (2-1)
Phoenix: Lost tiebreaker on season series (0-2, 1 game remaining)
Portland: Season series undetermined (2-0, 2 games remaining), won tiebreaker on division records (Jazz worst possible: 7-6, Blazers best possible: 6-8)
Minnesota: Won tiebreaker on season series (2-1)
Golden State: Can't tie
Sacramento: Can't tie
New Orleans: Can't tie

And Hollinger's Playoff Odds thing now has us at exactly 50.0% chance for playoffs. On the other hand, ESPN's AccuScore also told us that the Jazz had only a 22% chance to beat Houston in Houston, so...
