Jazz select Grayson Allen at 21

Yeah, it was Ainge who called. He offered Marcus Morris for Grayson Allen. DL told him that he liked the offer, but it was a shame that he didn’t have a TPE to be able to absorb his salary. He then apologized for not having those capabilities, wished him luck, and hung up the phone.

I heard this when I bumped into a relative of Andy Larsen at Best Buy this morning.

Don’t worry. We all love DL. I said he was a top 3 GM, if not higher, even back after passing on Niko. Stand by that. But he’s been awful in the second round. Bring back KOC for that. It’s the only place he excelled.
Man your man crush for niko makes me wanna barf. Get over it dude.

Yeah I immediately thought about Ainge when he said 2 good teams. It's like he can't help himself not to grab the guy that remind him of himself so much.

If Ainge really wanted Allen then I like the pick even more. Anytime Ainge doesn't get what he wants it's win in my book. Dream scenario... It was Ainge who called DL after we took Grayson. DL picked up the phone and didn't say a word. Ainge made his offer for Grayson. DL said nothing and just hung the up the phone. LOL

I suppose we'll never know what the trade Gail signed off on was. That kind of stuff usually never comes out. Sucks because it drives me crazy haha. Wish I was a fly on the wall in the draft room.

Has anyone heard and or figured out...

- What the trade proposal was that Gail Miller signed off on that would have cost the team money but ultimately didn't happen

- Which 2 "good teams" were trying to trade ahead of the Jazz to draft Grayson

???

My first impression when I heard DL say "two good teams" were trying to trade up was Boston and GSW. Boston loved Grayson pre-draft. Idk though

I’m a little skeptical... this seems like Ainge talk... he’s infamous for saying we were close on this and that and it didn’t happen.

No doubt deals were discussed but I doubt we were putting out a ton of cash for something. If it was GSW I’m not sure what they could even offer that is so great. Boston on the other hand would have been interesting to see.

Or he said new number who dis?

He does have a point. Draft picks in any sport just tend to be crap shoots no matter how much you invest in scouting. Some have better probability to pan out than others, but it's all still a gamble.

Ummm then you trade picks for established players not cash... his point was dumb AF.

Best post of the draft. Well played!

Man **** is always going down at Best Buy...

Come on man. Being critical of a person or an action doesn't mean I can't also like or understand the good they do.

It just seems to be a pattern each summer with certain posters. We didn’t draft this or that guy, we didn’t spend money on the right free agents, we made dumb trades, etc etc. Then the season plays out and it’s all good.

One thing I can say about his troubles with finishing around the rim - the Jazz have had very good success developing young players' finishing through variety of scoop shots, nifty off-rhythm, off-leg finishes, etc. Lets see what they can do with Grayson....

For the record... I love the Grayson Allen pick. I think he'll be a great back up, possible decent starter.

Then we should sell our first rounders too... I mean most of those guys don’t pan out... plus if we hit on more of them how would we pay all the talent.
First rounders are like rolling the die and trying to hit even numbers. Second rounders are like playing slot machines. Yeah, the Jazz have missed on a lot of their first rounders, but they've done well with them too.

So just punt and don’t gamble at all... and trade the basketball asset for cash... that really doesn’t help the basketball side at all... but I’m sure it’s reinvested in the program since we are always spending big and buying up assets.

I mean that’s how GSW built their dynasty... and SA too they just gave those picks away for cash because the chances you hit are 5%-10%, so why bother. Smart management... jump way the hell over those dollars to grab at a few pennies.

So here is what gives me hope (I am okay with the pick for the record)

Common traits of dudes that got better under our development program:

Coachable
Hard working
Desire/Love for the game
Good B.B. IQ
Able to play with others/selfless

Traits of guys who failed or got stagnant:

Not teachable
Not committed
Selfish
Low BB IQ
Guys named Trey

Some guys had length, some had athleticism, some were already good shooters, some were bad...

Basically everyone that really gave their all succeeded at getting better... I think Grayson has many of the things that we will need to make him better. So I’m cool.
