Jazz Should Extend Royce

With the flurry of rookie extensions today I thought this would be a solid stand alone thread. Jazz should extend Royce. There will be an abundance of cap space available this summer and not many free agents to take it. He doesn't get the rookie extension like the guys getting deals now... we can do it in season. Highest we can go is like 4/$48M which is more than enough.

4/$30M seems like it should get the deal done... add some incentives to give it some upside for Royce and limit our exposure. JZ... get er done!
The problem is that there aren't too many notable free agents next year like there were this last offseason. If Royce has another year like last year or better, then someone would end up paying him probably more than we could offer. This is all considering that the Jazz extend Mitchell a max offer next offseason.

I really like Oneale, I just dont think that he would want an extension without seeing what the open market would get him.

It was tough to see Hood melt down in that contract year. Maybe Royce could make more after the season but it would be nice to have that pressure lifted off of him with a contract early in the season.

Wouldn't he be a restricted FA? So "more than we can offer" is not the right term to use. The Jazz are, once again, in the lower tier of NBA teams in terms of salaries (26th). During Lindsey's tenure, Jazz have been near the bottom (26th-30th), five seasons, IINM. They should have an ample war chest built up to survive a year of possible overlapping salaries. Conley comes off the books in two years - if he exercises his option - and so will Ingles.

I don't see the Conley/Mitchell experiment working out. Jazz have a pint-sized backcourt. They're going to get abused defensively. And offensively, both need the ball in their hands to be successful. We could very well see a Mitchell/O'Neale/Bogdanovic/Gobert and PF-to-be-named-later starting 5 as soon as next year or the year after.

The Jazz are at the cap right now, how much do you think they could offer realistically? I dont think that the Jazz traded all of those assets to rent mike Conley for 1 year. The Jazz would have to shed contracts like Dante in order to even realistically offer him close to what other teams might.

How do we pay for Rudy, Donovan, Bogdonavich, conoly, and oneale? Like I talked about in my post above, I dont think it's in his best interest to get an extension considering the mediocre players in this offseason.

Dude .. both Conley and Mitchell will be very very good off ball. Offensive production and fit is NOT a problem with those two

I think that both Jazz and Royce want to make a deal. Royce sure feels great on that team, his role is increasing and I am sure he appreciates what Jazz did for him giving a chance in NBA and developing him. Plus the close friendship with Donovan. And I can see the front office trying to give him best what they realistically can (like they did with Rubio and Favors).

They didn’t do anything with Rubio

Thank you... I didn’t have the energy to explain basketball to him.

I think defense is a legit concern especially with Conley/ Mitchell/ Bogey lineups. We have to outgun/ outscore people when these three are on the floor. But we will.
