I think it was more than once, and he needed to go to get valuable experience*, but was trying to be a badass and hold out for more money. Ultimately, he's finished with less money over his career. Another player with a relative as an agent who got bad advice.

* playing against scrubs in Summer League might not sound important, but if you play 30 mins a game over 6 games, that's 180 minutes of game-time. That was about a half-season worth of game-time for CJ in his early years. Playing these minutes could have improved his play, and hence his next payday, but we'll never know, because he was and is happy just to be an NBA player, not the best NBA player he can be.
