Exactly. Marvin was drafted 2nd overall 7 years ago. If you redrafted the 2005 draft, would Marvin go #2 again? Does Manu Ginobili have the trade value of a 57th pick? Utah acquired him for what he is: a serviceable starter with a no-so-great contract who fit a position of need - not a #2 overall pick. His draft position means nothing.

I was just saying we have a lot of talent. Talent doesn't always equal success or productivity. The complaint about Dwill's Utah is that we had a bunch of over-achieving under-talented players. Now we don't have that excuse.

Yes. And undoubtedly why KOC didn't demand a draft pick and then walk away when a 2nd-rounder didn't come our way. I will always disagree with those who say each trade has to be looked at separately and you have to maximize each or not do a deal. WE desperately needed a solid wing, preferably a bigger SF who could stretch the defense. And that's exactly what we got. A rotation of Williams, Hayward and Burks, with Gordon splitting his time between the 2 and 3. And Carroll getting some PT in case of injuries or foul trouble. No CJ. No Bell. Wing rotation DONE!

And give my thanks to Howard for his efforts last season. He was a true professional and gave all he had and did it with a terrific attitude. Now he's free to sign with Dallas and not have to feel guilty deserting the team which gave him a new lease on his basketball life.
 
I know everybody likes a new toy, but Marvin Williams is fringe starter in the NBA. He improves us by virtue of the fact we had less than fringe starters in the NBA playing the wing for us last year. If we didn't have that second year, I'd really like the deal. As it stands, I think its pretty neutral.

What about the second year dont you like? He will probably opt out anyway to get a longer deal. Otherwise, seriously that cap space is worthless. we wont sign a better player than Marvin

Marvin Williams has ZERO chance to get better than an MLE deal. He'll never opt out.
 
Our best line-up last year had Favors, Jefferson and Millsap due to the defense and rebounding. Now we've got that defense and rebounding with an SF, so we can have that level of production when either Millsap or Jefferson are out of the game.

A-****ing-men. So now Marvin's contract is going to kill our ability to sign the 3rd of 3 max guys, right? Do some of you people really think we are going to get more than 1 of those types in 2013? I simply do not, and as a result, I like this move. He is young, has the potential to get better in a new environment, fills a position of need with excellent size, above average defense and shooting to boot......and if he doesn't pan out he will be gone in 2 years.

But I'm probably wrong, now Dwight, Paul and Harden will have to all go their separate ways instead of going through with their "Super Utah 2013" plan.
 
Marvin may even prefer 4 years of MLE money to one year of 7.5 mil. Some folks will take a bit less for the security.

I'd rep you again if I could.

I think Marvin will have a pretty solid season for us and I do like the size, length and ability to guard 3's and 4's he gives us at the defensive end. A definite improvement for Utah...obviously bigger and more physical than Hayward, younger and more durable than Howard and knows his limitations and can play within himself unlike CJ. Just don't like taking on guys with not-so-great contracts, and $7.5 mil in 2013 for Marvin Williams is pretty unattractive to me.

Cap Space is not only about free agents. And it's only partially about getting the big names. Having a lot of it makes it possible to get any player who is undervalued at the MLE from teams that only have the MLE to offer.

I'm hoping for a solid backup 5/4 and a top-10 protected pick.

If we get another 1st, that would give us three, probably enough to trade up and get at least the 2nd best PG in teh draft (whoever that will be). And I think we need a banger to come in for 10 mins/per and punish some opposing bigs. Think Fes with the ability to actually make a basket and stamina > 5 mins.

Didn't someone post in another thread that we'd now have roughly $32 mil if Marvin picks up his option? How much do we need?
