Maybe, but if they really wanted KO it would have made a lot more sense to wait until free agency.

Do they get this bird rights? I think they would have had a good chance in getting him in free agency with having home court advantage. He was absolutely stoked to be playing for his favorite team growing up.
I can see it from the standpoint of wanting to try KO out before committing to him longer term. I don't think that would be worth a first, especially when it has a chance of making their pick worse this year.

Not really, keep your pick this year, add another good young player into the rotation.
Try to compete in 2025 where even if the pick conveys you still have 2 unprotected FRPs.
If the trade is about KO to me it means they think they have a better shot at his next deal if he is already on the team. Because they could have him in free agency and they are going nowhere this year.
I'm sure it's about both players. Ochai is a good guy to take a small bet on.

It makes more sense now that I understand that Masai wants their pick to convey. I don't completely understand his reason for wanting the pick to convey (what are the protections on the pick for next year?), but it seems pretty clear that he must really not like this draft.
