Thanks to the generosity of Green I went to the game tonight, took the family with me. The arena is always so much fun, I like watching all the little things you never see on tv.
We didn't tell the kids what we were doing, we went downtown early and walked around ending up in City Creek mall food court for Red Iguana for me, McDonalds/subway for the kids, mine was much better than theirs.
One of the kids whispers to me, "Dad are you taking us to the Jazz game?" And then smiles ear to year when I nod yes. They were all excited when we got to the arena.
I think my wife was secretly surprised there were actually tickets waiting for us. When I told her about Greens offer she gave me look that said something like, "You seriously want me to believe that someone you've never met contacted you over the internet to give you tickets? You idiot haven't you ever watched Dateline! While we are standing at the ESA doors looking stupid, some creep is probably going to rob our house of all our possessions including the tube tv we got when grandma died.". There were a few tense moments for me at will call while the lady shuffled through the stacks of tickets...ours were the last one in her pile.
When we got inside we found it was free Jazz cup night, awesome and one of my kids ended up with a balloon sword that whacked the siblings and people next to us all night long- not awesome.
The crowd was thin, but not negative. I expected some boos for Ty, but never heard them. The kids thought it was too loud, they sat with ears covered for a while in the first quarter. The kid behind us wore a pair of blue ear muffs. Ha ha, the kids would have died in the old days when the house was packed.
I was stunned to see the starting lineup.
It was funny to see Biedrens in the opening video, I figured that is why they waited so long to cut him.
Alec burks is incredible. One play early in the 1st quarter Alec gets the def rebound and everyone on both teams turns and trots back, Alec looks at everyone like "why aren't we running?" And turns to take off down the court for a transition bucket.
But overall the transition play was sad. Everyone plodded down in one clump and then set up the offense. I miss the days of the wings running wide and crossing baseline while one of the bigs RAN the middle. Just running wide would be better than what they do, heck just running would be better than what they do.
It seemed the jazz offense was so forced and rigid when it went through Hayward and Favors. When they got taken out it was fun to watch Trey, Alec, Enes and Evans it was more fluid, more movement and less predictable.
Gobert could be great, He disrupts everything, I love it. His offense needs a little work and he gathers himself to leap, a summer at p3 and the Vegas league is going to help him with that. He had less zeal after getting knocked in the face.
Enes' rumbling dunks were awesome he just has a feel for offense. Can we get an evil scientist to merge Rudy and Enes?
Can the evil scientist also put Evans leaping ability and heart into Favours body? Favors was not impressive last night, I didn't see the box score maybe it looked better. This is probably unfair because I don't know him, but if Ostertag was happiest sitting under a tree watching clouds, Favor reminds of someone who would be happiest sitting under a tree making clouds. Show some fire please Mr. Favors.
The Blazers learned the best way to stop burks was to have Mathews grab And hold him. Refs let it go, and the jazz didn't respond by doing the same thing on the other end. Mathews also killing burks on the other end, part of burks problem was him relaxing on his man after the play went to the other side. Burks was visibly frustrated by Mathews scoring on him repeatedly. I hope it motivates him, and wonder if that is another reason why he has been 6 th man all season.
Speaking of visibly frustrated, it looked like Hayward shot some daggers at Trey over play calling in the 3rd quarter. It seemed an odd reaction over a simple thing, is there more to the story?
Did Trey play the entire 3rd quarter? He was gassed at the end. He got into the lane several times in the game but couldn't buy a foul call despite getting killed. Treys pull back hesitation cross over with about 4 minutes left in the 2nd qtr drew a collective gasp from the crowd, and the no call got the boos.
The half time show was incredible the Beale street flippers or something like that. Great athletes.
When the blazers started to push the Jazz around and pull away I watched to see who would respond. Richard Jefferson did, Trey did, I didn't see much more.
Trey and favors looked good in the last few seconds, against the Blazers bench. And that worries me about this team- because of their flaws they might be second team (or lower) players. Lindsey has a big job in front of him.
My kids didn't stop smiling or thanking me after the game until they fell asleep.
Green gave me more than a few tickets to a jazz game, I was hero to my kids and that will last atl east until I ask them to do their Saturday chores.
