What's new

***Jazz vs Sixers tonight @7!*** Lyles to Debut!

I waited till after this game to vote in the Burke/Cotton poll. Might be a mute point with Neto signed, but since tonight was the Cotton I'm used to seeing, I assume he could continue to play well. So maybe Burke will be traded. In the meantime, Cotton will play in Las Vegas. He scored 8 of the 10 overtime points tonight.

Cooley is getting a roster spot 100% before Cotton is, and Pleiss has been bought out. That brings us to 14 players on the roster.

Cooleys had 3 good summer league games. He was absolutely terrible last year in his limited minutes. Since the Jazz are PG-heavy, you may be right but I dont think anyone looking past these 3 games would pick Cooley over Cotton

Exum/Burke/Neto
Burks/Hood/_____
Hayward/Ingles/Millsap
Favors/Booker/Lyles
Gobert/(Pleiss)/____

We have 12 under contract. Pleiss surely brings us to 13, seeing as we bought him out. NBA teams usually roll 14 deep, but I think there's the option to hit 15.

Cooley for sure hits that 14th spot-- and I think number 15 will be kept open in case of energy. Don't really see any roster room for Bryce Cotton.
my official prediction is that the jazz trade Burke and keep cotton.

My first impressions of Lyles are very positive. He definitely has an old school laid back offensive game. Not overly athletic but smart. Loved his pass to Cooley in OT. Needs to get stronger was pushed around under the basket while rebounding. I thought he occupied his guy while rebounding but lacked the strength to get the rebound. Do not think he will be a great rebounder but can improve with added strength and experience. I am sure being his first game also contributed to the lack of rebounding. I think he definitely has the making of a stretch four and I was surprised how much he played out on the perimeter.

I liked how he set picks and with a little luck a few more of those missed shots would have gone in. I didn't see the traveling when he made the nice move to the basket in the first half. As far as defense, this part of his game needs the most work however, I liked how he went out and guarded on the perimeter. I think in certain circumstances he may play a hybrid SF. I think due to it being his first game he was just trying to be at the right spot on defensive. I don
t think he will be a shot blocker or a great defender but there are some skills there that can be developed. OVerall I give him a B-/C+ for his first game. I am hopeful that we have the making of another important part of our championship roster.

I really love it when Cotton pushes the ball. I would certainly love it if the Jazz could keep him. I would trade Burke to do so.

Great post.

Just saw the Cooley/Lyles PNR in OT. That is the most exciting thing about Lyles. Great play, great pass.

I agree, thinking about that play with Favors or Gobert being the recipient makes me excited. If teams try to hide an immobile big (cough: Kanter) you can jut abuse them with this sort of motion.

Some of you guys are just missing it entirely.

Shots, especially when you show decent form, can be fixed/retooled/improved. That's not an issue imo. He's 19, and will probably improve. You know what you can't develop if you don't have it? Instincts. IQ. Natural feel for the game. Lyles has that, and if he has even the slightest modicum of work ethic, then he'll be just fine.

I don't know if some of you were expecting a finished product, but he's not that. I was excited by what I saw though.

Bottom line he has to really improve that shot though so people actually guard him instead of giving him 2' of space. If he can force people to actually close out then he can really start making plays.

Cool, thx... But most everyone said only positive things in this whole thread.

Okafor's pick/roll defense looked as bad as Kanter's to be fair, but that was a nice recognition and reaction by Lyles, especially considering Cooley isn't the first guy you think of finishing on the roll.

I have to admit that I just love it when the Jazz win even in summer league. I loved the effort down the stretch by the guys. I also like Chris Johnson too but there really aren't anymore roster spots left to keep him. I hope we get to see Neto, Pleiss, and more Lyles in Vegas.

It sounds like Neto and Pleiss are skipping Vegas, but I'd have loved to see the Jazz roll out a starting lineup of Pleiss, Lyles, Hood, Exum and Neto just for the hell of it. Just to see how they could function together.
