Yea because the US U18 team had a bunch of stiffs. He played against the top young US team and dominated them. Guys like Sullinger, Barnes, etc. Of course he is a risk but so is everyone in this draft.
This was one game, and it was an all star type of game. It wasn't organized basketball, like NCAA is. I think what's more important is his overall HS record than this game. And after high school he wasn't even a top prospect. He had reputation for being inconsistent (see nbadraft.net profile). Knight was a top prospect after HS. Then after Kanter lost entire year of development, while Knight led his team to #3 ranking in NCAA as a freshman, Kanter is top prospect and Knight is not? Of course every player has a risk, be it #1 overall or #60, but that doesn't mean that risk is the same for everyone, so you just ignore it. And in Kanter's case risk is enormous. In Europe he played in a crappy League, and didn't get any minutes there. He was young, OK, that is a valid excuse, but the fact is, we have no record there on any team. The only thing we have from Europe is his good jr performances, U18 MVP, and it's good and all, but someone like Koufos had even better numbers in U18 tourney. Nobodies like Sani Becirovic and Giorgios Diamantopoulos set records there that still stand. Every year there are several jr tournaments, with several MVPs, whose names you never heard of and never will hear of. It's a nice thing to have, but this is not even an indication guys can play 3d string in NBA, not to mention be a top pick. In US for Kanter we have inconsistent HS record and 1 great all star game. Then a year, where he could not play nor practice in NCAA. Good size, good combine, mixed scouts reports. Some say he is good, some (like in draft express profile page) compare him to Nicola Vucevic.
I just don't see how a responsible organization can just look objectively at his record and say, yeah this is Karl Malone talent. I do see Calipari saying that, since he coached him and he realizes the guy has hype and may go high, and he pimped him up, especially after he missed a whole year in his program, and I am sure he wants to help as much as he can. Still it is good to know coach Cal likes the kid, but ... if you take out the hype and look at his HS record and Europe record (which is the only thing has has), I just don't think he jumps out as the top guy.
