Jazz will try Burks at the point during summer league

I love the idea of Burks at the point. I remember them mentioning this at the time they drafted him too. I really hope this pans out.

I hope more PG play helps him develop the "I don't need to attack then react; rather, the opposite" mindset. Was probably my main qualm with Burks in his rookie-play this season.

Or it means they are targeting a new PG and shopping Harris

I would love to see Harris and Millsap/or Jefferson traded before the beginning of next year. Maybe if we get another wing, and Burks plays point, (or backup point) the young guns will get more playing time next year.

This suggests that the Jazz are not going to try to acquire a new point guard at least for now.

I am not sure it suggests that. I really like the idea. If Burks could become serviceable at PG, it opens up a lot of versatility with the potential to exploit matchups.

Of course, there is the possibility that he becomes a star there... That would be awesome, but I think it is more likely that they are trying to change his mindset to more of a team approach.

I made a thread about this months ago as a good idea. Mold him into a Westbrook role. But I think he could be a better passer.

I am not sure either, but just speculating. Harris was serviceable enough last year(by no means am I saying the Jazz do not need a new point guard), and helped get them into the playoffs with his 3 point spree the last month of the season. With that and KOC saying yesterday that he is not going to make a move for just the short term, it gives me the feeling that the cautious Jazz front office is willing to wait a little longer before they get their point guard of the future.

I don't like Burks as the starting PG, at all. I like him to get minutes and I do believe playing point in summer league will help his overall game, but I just don't see him evolving in to a true PG. (I know I'm in the minority on this and that's fine.)

To me it says we're adding a sf or sg to the roster and need to slide Burks somewhere.

Take a Jefferson for Iggy swap for instance. If something like that happens we need to find some minutes for Burks at SG and PG if we want him to see 30+mpg.

I’d give it a shot. Especially in summer league – it’s not like Harris, Watson, or Tinsley will be suiting up in Orlando.

Burks is a guy who thrives with the ball in his hands. From what I’ve seen he’s showed good court vision and a willingness to get others involved/make plays for teammates (especially in college). He’d never be a Rondo/Nash/Stockton type floor general. If that’s what you want for this team, he’s not your guy.

But I think he could be effective in the way that guys like Westbrook/Wade/Dragic (sort of) are at the quasi-PG position (i.e., an attack-minded lead ballhandler). If you wanted Burks to play PG, you don’t want to morph him into the floor-general mold, either…doesn’t suit his nature or his skillset.

Where I really like Burks at PG is on the defensive end. 6’6”, 6’10” wingspan, quick as ****, aggressive, cocky as hell…he could become a terror. Real lockdown type.

This would make me happy!

If Burks is to become what everyone wants him to be (wade light) he's going to have to be able to play point for short stretches of games. I support this idea 100%

Excellent point. This is probably what the organization has in mind.

I agree.

I believe burks will be a great scorer in this league, and i believe he will best be able to score bunches and bunches of points as a 2 guard. Therefore i think we really need a good passing point guard.

I still see burks as best compared to dwayne wade. Burks is a slasher who gets the basket and free throw line with ease.... Dont take away those skills by trying to make him a set up man. If he is a point guard then there would be alot less slashing and getting to line for burks. Have him in isolation situations and out running on the fast break.
