Jazzfanz ALL-TIME Fantasy Draft

I'm cool with whatever you decide. It's been a fun experience for me. You can see how challenging it can be to GM a team, especially when you have to consider salaries, contracts, trade possibilities, and free agency.

I think we're all set to go. You're facing Whisky, if I remember correctly. Just go to the first page to see the bracket and send me a PM on why you think your team would win, then I'll post your argument with a poll.

Sorry for not paying attention.... So I'm matched up against Whiskey. Am I supposed to do a line-up, show how I'm going to guard his guys, etc. ? Or we do a thread for each match-up and we talk our smack on that thread ?

I sent my PM... It's pretty generic and not match up specific. I'm crunched for time so it will have to do. This was fun... but school beckons!

Spycam, your inbox is full..... I wrote all this stuff..... You obviously don't have to read it.

In a nutshell:

  • These are both very good and complete teams.
  • My first unit has an advantage at the 1 and the 3 (Penny and KG) who have a mismatch and can both run actions.
  • Penny and either KG or Amar'e will try to exploit KJ and Dirk in the pick-and-roll.
  • We should also have a moderate advantage on the boards.
  • The benches are closely matched, but Latrell is a slightly better player than Maerjle and Yao has a small advantage over Parish
  • We're going hard at the rim for high-percentage plays, especially once Hakeem is off the floor.

More detail:

Starting Line-ups....

Whiskey : Hakeem, Dirk, Worthy, Drexler, KJ

Catchalls : Wilt, Amar'e, KG, Dominique, Penny

Offensively, Wilt stays near the low post, KG near the top of the circle, Penny handles the ball on the perimeter, Dominique spaces the floor out to 22 feet on the weak side. Amar'e floats outside the lane. We would attack with Penny vs. KJ and either KG or Amar'e vs. Dirk out of a screen-and-roll.

Penny can use his size/length advantage (6 or 7 inches) to back KJ down or spin around him and go hard towards the rim. Penny tries to draw one of the post defenders. Penny can either finish or dish to Wilt, pass back to KG at the top of the circle, feed Nique cutting near the baseline or feed Amar'e floating outside the lane. After the dish, KG would shoot a top-of-the-key jumper or feed another shooter, Amar'e would go at the rim and challenge defenders up high. He can get over Dirk and Worthy and draw a contest from Hakeem. We'll run this play a few times to see how Whiskey defends. We might leave Nique out on the floor as a spacer to keep Drexler from helping in the lane.

Penny can also run pick-and-roll with either KG or Amar'e who comes up from the post. The goal is to exploit Dirk's pick-and-roll defense and have our player, who's quicker, get a step. If Penny gets a step on his defender (KJ) with the screen, he again draws a defender and either challenges, or finds the screener (KG or Amar'e) for a pick-and-roll or pick-and-pop near the foul line. Since KJ is too small to disrupt Amar'e or KG after the catch, either Penny or one of the bigs should get an open look. If Hakeem comes over to contest, look for Wilt to take a lob or bounce pass.

Wilt can also post Hakeem, back down and challenge at the rim or with a soft bank shot.

Whiskey's team is quick, and I don't see many early offense opportunities. We'll have to go to the half court and play through Penny, KG and Wilt.

Defensively, Wilt guards Hakeem, Penny guards KJ, KG guards Worthy, Nique guards Drexler, and Amar'e guards Dirk. We maintain single coverage unless someone's really getting beat. Players switch on screens and can recover with another switch if need be. The goal is to make KJ and Drexler shoot contested jumpers out on the floor, or make Dirk take long jumpers that are contested Amar'e has to stay out on Dirk and disrupt him with his length. If Hakeem starts going postal against Wilt with his fades, we may send KG to help double and make Worthy beat us with his jumper, secondary offense or passing.

Hakeem and Wilt should basically neutralize each other, although Wilt should be the stronger rebounder. Drexler and Dominique are similar players, with Nique being a better outside shooter and Drexler being better defensively. Ultimately, I can defend Dirk and Worthy a bit better than they can defend KG and Amar'e who just have too much length and quickness. Penny in the backcourt is also an advantage for me on both sides, although KJ can create in the lane if he gets by Penny. I see three ways to score in the half court, and generally we should win the battle of the rebounds to take a slight advantage overall. Mostly, this is due to Penny beating KJ in his individual match-up and either KG or Amar'e making life difficult for Dirk.

Bench.....

Whiskey : Robert Parish, Larry Nance, Schrempf, Maejrle, Pistol

Catchall : Yao, KG and Amar'e rotating, Kukoc, Sprewell, Tim Hardaway

I'll rotate KG over to PF with the 2nd unit and replace him with Amar'e with a third unit. KG can take Nance, but it may be a physical battle and Nance has both the length and the vertical to contest KG. KG will be the main facilitator up high and try to get a step on Nance. With Hakeem off the floor, all of my guys are going to go at the rim as soon as they get a step. They'll challenge Parish and Nance and put themselves in high-percentage situations.

We can run pick-and-roll with KG and Tim Hardaway to see if Pistol and Nance can defend it. Tim can also try to break down Pistol and create an advantage, but that may or may not be very easy. Our next play is to have Sprewell use a slight lateral quickness advantage over Maejrle to try to break him down. If he can, he can finish or dish to another shooter, likely Yao or KG/Amar'e. We'll feed Kukoc for open looks if we can make his defender leave him and we don't have something better.

We can also initiate through Yao in the post, who can turn into the lane or step back and shoot and 8-foot jumper. If a double comes or if we can pull Parish out of position, we can swing the ball to an open shooter who is then likely to go at the rim with Hakeem off the floor.

If this isn't working, we have to bring Penny back on the floor to create offense by going over or going around Pistol.

These are great match-ups and very close. Yao is slightly more versatile offensively than Chief, but only has a small advantage here. Kukoc and Schrempf are somewhat similar players who play a similar role. I like Kukoc's jumper a bit better, but both can finish near the rim and make good passes. Schrempf is more of a mid-range player. I honestly don't know how good Larry Nance is. He was a 3rd option guy with the Suns after the Suns got Tom Chambers. We'll have to see what he's got by challenging him with our forwards.

Good god.

I think Catchall should just be crowned winner on effort alone.

Catchall just a word of advice...

You might have trouble selling KG at the 3 spot. I'm not saying he couldn't pull it off, I'm just saying it might hurt you in the voting. People might not see it.
