No idea how that got quoted

I was referring to cy's post

Lol had a serious wtf moment there

Just picked up the stand. It's pretty long, but after reading Atlas shrugged I feel I can get through anything (and the bible, although that was piece by piece over an extended period of time)

the stand is long, but its good enough to not matter that its so long

The 1st half of the book is just introducing all the characters, I probably enjoyed the characters background stories the most though.

I read Atlas Shrugged in high-school because I had a libertarian friend who really was pushing it on me and I wanted to impress him. What did you think of the book? I found the 2000 page speech at the end to be over-indulgent and unnecessary (it's not like we needed a big MORAL at the end; the book is a lot of things, subtle isn't one of them). I have problems with Rand's philosophy, but she makes some interesting points, and there's parts of A-Shrugged that I really enjoyed and was impressed by.

I also feel that The Stand is the shortest 800 page book I've ever read. It moves at an incredibly fast pace--it's a midnight book, for sure. Once you get into it you're going to lose some sleep to it.

There were actually 2 different versions of The Stand. When it was originally published the publisher wasn't sure King was enough of a draw to warrant a 1000+ page tome, so they cut it down like 3 or 4 hundred pages. Later when King proved his staying power it was re-released at the previous 1000+ pages with some editing of the story line and restoring most of the lost pages.

And it added the most interesting/disturbing character. The Kid.

I am a huge libertarian so it was a must read for me. I loved the book but I did think that the speech was overkill. The rest of the book explained the ideas well enough so that that type of a speech wasn't necessary. Great book though. Applicable on many levels.

True story: met a guy who had that entire Galt speech memorized. Total freak. Worst. Social. Skills. Ever.

Almost done with the Wheel of Time series.

Started off strong, hit a lull around books 7-10, and now it's ending soon. I like Sanderson's writing style a little more than Jordan, may have to check out some of his own novels.

How long you been readin it?

Quite a while. I started last year, then quit reading around book 8 or 9 cause I was bored with it, and just started about 2 weeks ago. I'm on book 13 now...I can be a fairly quick reader when motivated.

Ya thats pretty quick.
I think i was reading the series for like 8 months and was almost done with book six when i gave up.

I was at the point when reading it was like a chore. I would force myself to read it and then i thought "im going to be reading this for like another year" and i normally love to read. So i had to move on.

I went to wikipedia and read summaries of the rest of the books so i would know what happened

The last couple books have been quite good, the middle of the series is most definitely the worst.

He has decent to good character development, but all of the women in the series are such bitches (pretty realistic, tbh) that it made me hate reading their chapters. I still read them, but I kind of skim over them unless something important is happening. Sanderson is a lot more dry and has more of a sense of humor, so I've really enjoyed his writing. Mat Cauthon has become a great character, probably my favorite.

I didn't like Mat at first. I think Sanderson killed all the preparation Jordan did for him. He somewhat became goofy, kid-like again. His story in Towers of Midnight was GREAT, though.
