I am just going to openly laugh in your face the next time you mention socialism, small government or anything else along those lines.
You're actually for extremely invasive government. Just not for yourself.
A person can only prove his actual humanity by the inconsistencies in his views, thoughts, beliefs, values, loves, hates....whatever we can actually "value". If there are no inconsistencies, we have surrendered our souls to some kind of authoritarian logic, some kind of church, or state.
Personally, it's too much work for us to do all that soul-searching. That's why we let the professionals, the authorities, do it for us..... and give up our own values.
Mormonism, imo, is one of the worst offenders in terms of endlessly posting approved values and requiring humans to sustain the policies.....
I actually believe that the Brit elites who got up their schemes of socialism had a passel of Mormon missionaries explaining the United Order, communitarian societies of "Saints" and such.
Most of todays "infidels" see the same thing on Saturday Night Live in the Church Lady bits.
Well, so we're not perfect, and we can passionately love incompatible things....
I realize that our government has fallen badly into socialist institutions and values. If we are going to have stuff like social security, health care.....then we are actually making it the guvs business to regulate the hell outta all our humanity....every bad habit, every food fad, every dietary notion, every move we make.....risk management by the authorities determined to achieve a goal in cost/benefit analysis.
The worst thing about it all..... is that authority and the impulse to govern are boundless human appetites in themselves, and the thing we should fear above everything else in society.
