Jerry Sloan and Phil Johnson Appreciation Thread

After all they have done for the organization and for the sport of basketball, they deserved a much better ending to the reign. In front of a sell out crowd cheering and applauding all their efforts, instead of the current confusing and murky circumstances. Sad that they may never have the proper farewell they so greatly deserve...

It's still so hard to believe that Coach Sloan and his trusty sidekick will not be coaching the Utah Jazz anymore. C.J. Miles was born the year Jerry was appointed head coach.

All the best to Coach Sloan and Johnson. Time to take a back seat and enjoy life. :)

good post for the most part, though given Sloan's personality, I don't think he could go out that way, I just don't picture him making some announcement that "this is my last season" and then continuing to coach as a lame duck. Maybe that's why he said he'd be a dizzy duck - he'd rather be dizzy than lame. j/k

I'm sure the organization will figure out a memorable way to honor Phil and Jerry for their coaching careers with the Jazz and give them both a proper farewell.

and thanks for the beautiful picture JayQ!

One of my favorite Sloan memories was when he lead the roster of arroyo, bell, ak, borchardt, ruffin, tag ect to a WINNING season. Incredible how hard that team played for him.

THIS THIS THIS THIS! That was Sloan's finest hour! Few coaches in the league could have taken that squad to a winning record. That was all SYSTEM right there, not stars. Almost makes me wish we had that team back. Because I feel like our current crop, barring a few of the very young kids, doesn't have much heart and doesn't know where it's going. I wish Sloan had gotten COY for that season he took our lunchbucket guys over .500 because that was fun. Grueling too, but fun. Scrappy. Like Jerry himself.

Welcome back, buddy. Nice to see you've still got the same avatar.

I've always been impressed with the success Utah has had playing with guys who are not the superstars.

I'd give you 2 other examples

1. The important roles guys like Foster and Keefe etc. played when the Jazz did have Stockton and Malone at their best.

2. I think Sloan did a great job last season and in the first half of this season getting wins with the squad he had. It was a bit baffling to me how unhappy Jazz fans were with the record of the team up until the 6 game losing streak. They've been a bit spoiled I think. There are a lot more Grizzlies, TWolves and Clippers in the league than there are teams that find a way to compete in the playoffs every year, even if they aren't one of the 4 or so teams in the league that seem to always be designated as elite by forces beyond their control.

Jerry Sloan has been a part of every great moment in Utah Jazz history - either as a head coach or an assistant. That is remarkable. He is our franchise. I know people like to claim that can't be the case, but in this instance, Jerry Sloan is the Utah Jazz.

He's the only coach in Jazz history to win 50 games.
He's the only coach in Jazz history to win 60 games.
He's the only coach in Jazz history to guide us to the Western Conference Finals.
He's the only coach in Jazz history to guide us to the NBA Finals.
He's the only coach many of us have ever known.

This is difficult. It's like losing a Pope.

I feel so lost right now.

You're an idiot. Im pretty sure Sloan does NOT approve of pedophilia.

yesterday was a sad day. i thought id never see the day that sloan leaves...Farewell Jerry and thanks for the memories!

I haven't read anything is this thread, but I do want to say that I will miss Sloan. He was like the crazy uncle I never had.

When I got his autograph he had the warmest most sincere smile I've probably ever seen. While Deron pretty much rolled his eyes at me Sloan seemed to really want to say thank you to each and every fan that came through the line.

I have a lot of respect for Sloan and I hope his legacy reflects who he really was.

Why was Price the only Jazz player at the press conference?

(Edit: Should have gone in the other sloan thread. )

Thank you Coach Sloan for everything you did for this organization. Your principles of consistency, hard work and defiance to quitting are second to none and they affect many of us in so many ways outside of basketball. Good luck, Coach.

The things I loved about Jerry:
Fearless, brutally honest, hard-nosed, exposed stupid questions with simple responses, fiery, rock solid, excruciating hard work, simple. old school, technical fouls, refusal to conform

Put simply, he represents to me all of the old-fashioned values that our grandparents had, our parents started to forget, we didn't think were relevant, and our children have never heard about. A living legend.

This is my 2nd appreciation post to Jerry & Phil.

Sorry Deron, but this had to be done by someone. ;)
We all love you or some of us used to until you start whining to refs like Kobe & rest of those nuckleheads, started ripping Hayward in public, or even worse fighting with your own coach & letting media know about it which lead to loosing the greatest coaching duo in sports history. Probably it wasn't all your fault, but you were the last person that had to do something about it.

Once upon a time...

I don't care if you're going to leave or stay and help up win the championship, no player is bigger than Utah Jazz club, not even you!!!

I can't believe how much I hate Deron right now.
