This stinks. I know there are some health problems caused by concussions/blows to the head such as Lou Gherig's disease and others.

And I know concussions are a fairly regular occurrence in basketball and the way Sloan played back in the day was amazingly aggressive.

Of course, no matter if it's a head injury or genetics that's caused this it's just awfully sad.

My father in law has dementia...it's very difficult for everyone. My daughter summed it up this way, "it's like grandpa died but his body is still alive"...
Good (sad) way to put it

Haha... I dunno... I tend to think there are some things you'll NEVER forget.

Due to what I do for a living I work with people suffering from dementia every day. They never forget the things they were most passionate about. Specific details will be lost, but being the coach of the Jazz will always be who he was and is.

Personally I'd prefer to contract a deadly and painful form of cancer before being diagnosed with any form dementia.

Just want to say that I grew up not idolizing not any player, but Sloan. Best thing that ever happened to the Utah Jazz. He's the reason I love basketball and the Utah Jazz. im not sure there was ever a coach that got more out of his players then Sloan did.

My experience tells me the more active a person with this disease is the slower the illness seems to progress. I know Coach will deal and fight longer then most.

So sad. Dementia is horrible. My grandma suffered from Alzheimer's and my father's mental health has been fading recently. He's 86, but it's still hard to see it happen as he had one of the quickest wits of anyone I've known.

Sloan is only 74. It was great seeing him back with the team as an advisor. Now he'll likely just fade from public appearances.

Such a bummer. I have always had a keen respect for Sloan. I loved his persona, his team first, work hard, no nonsense unspoken message. I think for me, Sloan has had as big an impact on my life as any public figure. I always felt like he was a man without guile, which is perhaps one of the best character traits a person could have. Sure he lost his temper from time to time and wasn't perfect, but of course no one is. Personally, I think Sloan is as good a person as he was a coach. Have nothing but respect for him and hope for the best.

Damn. This stinks. I hope the best for Jerry. Does anyone have any first hand experience with this illness?

I've seen him at Utes basketball games this season, wondering what goes on in the mind of a coaching legend when watching from the sidelines. But yeah, this sucks.

Incredibly sad, but I'm not surprised. You could see that his health has been declining. Hope he is able to fight it without suffering too much...mental illnesses are some of the toughest things to endure

Yep. Lewy Body Dementia is often characterized by hallucinations. I wonder if he is having those at all.

My father had Lewy Body Dementia and he did indeed have hallucinations. It is not a fun or pretty thing to have. Toward the end, he became almost entirely senile.

So sorry. Sometimes the way we leave this life are just horrific.
