Joel Embiid Now Weighs 300 Pounds, 76ers Concerned With His Work Ethic
JAN 18, 2015 11:41 AM

Joel Embiid now weighs close to 300 pounds, representing a substantial gain from his 250 pounds while at Kansas last year.

Embiid's work ethic is being questioned by some within the Philadelphia 76ers.

Embiid had a blowup with assistant strength and conditioning coach James Davis, which is one of the reasons he was sent home during the team's recent West Coast road trip.

"He's a young, 20-year-old kid who is trying to figure his way into being a professional basketball player and learning life," Luc Mbah a Moute said.

Because of his foot injury, his conditioning has been limited. Embiid can only do things such as use the antigravity treadmill and take long walks to generate a rapid heart rate.

The Sixers are trying to address the added weight. Embiid, however, hasn't always been a willing workout participant, according to sources. He's even blown off conditioning drills, one source added.

Damn...

I'm not concerned.

This looks to me like overexaggerated misinformation from inside the Sixers. They haven't been able to motivate Embiid to do the workload they ask him to do. Now they try to let him experience fan feedback.
Of course they have his back and correct it to 275 one day later, which is still Drummond heavy, but not Traylor heavy.

I think the attitude and rumors of him refusing to work with their trainers are much more concerning than the weight itself...

Hardwork eventually pays off. I don't think players not smart enough will ball big time in today's game.

I hope when we compare Rudy the Rude and Embiid after 5 years, we are going to be smiling at all the lottery chances.

Not concerned?

A dude with a really bad injury history now weighs 300 lbs. How is he NOT going to get re-injured at that weight? This dude is basically Andrew Bynum minus ever being good.

When you are a big who has foot and back problems you have to work your *** off to be in the best shape possible so you can stay healthy. If you aren't, you are just adding a ton of weight that is going to put a lot of stress on an already weak structure.

Of course not

But even with what he said, I would still be super concerned as a Sixer's fan. Embiid might not be as lazy as the initial report, but he is still not doing what is necessary to get his body right. He is fighting an uphill battle to ever be able extended stretches of games, so this is not a good sign.

So last year when he blasted on the scene when everybody wrote closeup articles, you ignored to read how he discovered sweets for breakfast and sometimes ate multiple glasses of chocolate cream and stuff?

But now that he's 1 year older and has physical limitations and his own money for the first time you blast him to not rehab in Kobe-ish lunatic fashion? That's just unrealistic.

Nope, didn't ignore that at all. The fact that he was eating that way last year combined with the fact that now he is rich, injured, gaining lots of weight, and is reportedly not rehabbing very hard is extremely worrisome....... if you are a 76ers fan.

No it means he's just not taking the standard I'll do whatever my agent tells me to avoid negative media way of growing into being an NBA player.

That was by no way throwing him under the bus, it was simply demonstrating that the media can also be different towards him than writing: The young refreshingly open Cameroonian(is that a word?) is making others smile.

How do you reconcile the two? Embiid should not need any motivation short of the millions he is being paid. It's big boy time and he should be working his butt off for that money.

If I was a GM/owner and i was paying these salries I'd be pissed if they were not working their butts off to improve and condition themselves accordingly.

Honestly I expect no elitism from players before their 3rd year. Acclimatization is a thing, especially in a surreal environment like the NBA.
