What's new

John Kelly

I am of a higher moral character because I know better and they didn't. I'm not saying I was born this way, but I don't have any problems saying that.

Yes, you were born into a more technologically advanced world. So in a sense you do know better (vastly more access to information, communication, and material comfort). That's just a different way to state my argument, though.

And I'm not so sure it's such a bad thing to do a little less honoring of past figures and a little more honest appraisal of them.

What can that "appraisal" possibly teach you? What did the revelation of Gandhi's womanizing and racism teach us? That there are no heroes? There is value in that, I suppose. But I think there is more value to him as a symbol of non-violent resistance and whathaveyou. I would be okay with people honoring Gandhi because of that. I don't think Lee should be honored because to many people, he symbolizes slavery.

I guess my view is that we can look at someone like Ghandi and take the good with the bad. There's no reason we can't learn from his example of nonviolent resistance to injustice while recognizing where he fell short.

With regard to slavery though, I really take issue with the argument that its supporters were simply men "of their time." There were plenty of others who recognized it for the evil it was, abolitionists and slaves alike, do they not count? And if we're talking about Lee specifically I'm not sure what else he brings to the table, except for as a symbol of southern white supremacy.

“I would tell you that Robert E. Lee was an honorable man,” Kelly said during the interview.

“He was a man that gave up his country to fight for his state, which, 150 years ago, was more important than country,” he added. “It was always loyalty to state first back in those days. Now it’s different today. But the lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War. And men and women of good faith on both sides made their stand where their conscience had to make their stand.”

Pandering to the racists.

I think Kelly is testing the waters. He's trying to get a feel for just how far he can take this. And when nearly half the country is ok with this kind of polarization he becomes emboldened. Then we'll have two madmen pulling the strings. He already backed Trump against the soldier's widow, which he could have easily stayed out of, now this.

Who is John kelly? What title/position/job does he have?

And now he's doubling down on his stupidity. I swear he wants a civil war.

Every time I hear liberals talk about how divisive the right is I just scroll through all the tweets I get from the left

If I achieved anything this week it was forcing liberals to Google "Civil War" & learn that the Democratic Party wanted to keep slavery

The Democratic Party of 1860 is similar to today's Democratic Party. They refuse to work w/a Republican President & Compromise on his agenda

Well so much for trying to praise the Democrats by saying Robert E. Lee was an honorable man because he was a democrat

It makes me wonder if he's trolling or not. It's like he doesn't want anyone to consider the fact the only reason conservatives didn't google Robert E. Lee is because they already worship him for trying to keep slaves.

It's a mind****. He's drunk on power and wants to test its limits. Then he can do more egregious ****.

Trump's Chief of Staff. He's the General that came into his position as Trump's COS with high hopes by many that he could run the daycare.
Thanks for the response

Sounds like the doctor is sick. Or in this case, the babysitter needs their own babysitter.

What's the over/under on this administration's number of months left in office? I'll go with 8.5 and take the under.

I'll take the Christian right at this point.
