Jon Stewart returning to host the Daily Show

Holy crap. I mean wow. Guys, that right there is who should be president (Pete B)
There is no one better. Everyone needs to watch that segment with Pete. He is the absolute GOAT.

Not sure Kamala should pick him for VP or not. Not sure if he is the one to get her the electoral votes needed to win this election. But he damn well better be the front runner for president in 2028 incumbent be damned.

Hell, I wish that the Delegates at the convention would just shock the world and make him the nominee now. I dare anyone to try to find clips of him looking foolish. Combat war veteran. Speaks 8 languages. Young. Sharp. No scandals. Good looking. Unbeatable in a debate. This dude would dominate the independent voters.

Pretty sure I have never seen The Daily Show crowd give an ovation quite like that to any other guest.

Watching the first segment now and just had to pause it to mention the hilarious JD Vance joke for those who haven't watched.
A CNN anchor or something says "Democrats have 3 options in this election. Vote for Donald Trump, vote for Joe Biden, or stay at home on the couch"
Jon Stewart says "I know which option JD Vance will choose" while there is a picture of a couch on the screen.

Lololol

That segment was awesome. Loved it. Stewart is the perfect commentator for politics today. Almost wish he would run for president.

While I agree with all of your points here, there is only one thing that the majority of Americans will not vote for, besides a mormon...a gay man. Worse would be a gay woman, but still, here we are. Sadly he will likely never be considered a viable candidate for this reason. It is wrong and stupid and backward and ****ed up, but it is the truth. I have watched a lot of interviews now with him and conservative media and they always seem to have that as an undercurrent in the interview, if not brought up outright. He handles it really well, but NO ONE on the right and a very solid chunk in the middle will not vote for a gay person. Maybe sometime in the next 20 years we break that stigma down enough to get Pete, or someone else, through, but it won't be any time soon.

I understand the sentiment but I disagree.

We will vote for felons and rapists and adulterers, and scam artists, and dementia riddled people.

I think that if people think the country would be better with a candidate then they would vote for that candidate.

I think that Democrats will always vote for the Democrat. Republicans will always vote for the Republican (with a few exceptions). I think Pete could get the vast majority of the independent voters. I bet bucknutz would love to vote for Pete if he were the candidate for example and he is a Republican (I think)
Independent voters look less at the sex/race/whatever of the candidate imo. I think he could win. I'm an optimist though no doubt and that might be another way of saying naive but I still believe in people even after trump.

You are missing the bigger point. The ones who will vote for the rapist/felon/adulterer/scam artist are exactly who will vote against any gay candidate. They are the same demographic. And plenty of the silent middle that they keep talking about will refuse to vote for a gay person as well. I would bet at least 52-55% of the population, given a reasonably viable opponent, as in anyone other than Trump, would choose anyone else over a gay candidate. I am very certain that pitting Pete against Trump this year even, would just hand the presidency to the psycho. Do not underestimate the bigotry at play here. I disagree heartily that the majority of the middle will vote for a gay candidate, I believe it is just the opposite. We are generally a majority conservative country, but enough of those conservatives are moderates that given a nut-job like Trump they are willing to swing the other way for a single election. But they are still bigoted in many ways, especially against gays. So you will have some of the moderates vote for Pete more or less just to vote against Trump, but I believe the majority of them would vote against a gay candidate sooner than vote against Trump.

It is a weird dynamic in the moderates in our country no doubt. Many of them can see reality for what it is and therefore eschew Trump. But their deep-seated biases are still driving forces and plenty of them have deep-seated biases against gays. I would wager stronger than their biases even against minorities and women. So Harris has a chance, but I believe, given the current climate, Pete would have no chance.

I could very well be wrong, but that is my feeling especially given how many in my friend and acquaintance groups are more middle of the road conservatives. Plus looking at past voting records. Give them a straight, white, christian male that isn't firmly in the grip of dementia and he will beat Trump soundly. Give them a young minority woman and she likely beats Trump, but it is much closer. Give them a fringe group candidate, like a gay or mormon or anyone else they thing is just too much to deal with, and it turns the tide and they lose to Trump. It is just too much to ask of those in the middle who still carry those biases, which I think is a bigger group than we know.

I think many people are changing for the better.

I grew up in a very LDS family.
My parents are both Republicans. I think they could vote for a gay dude if being gay was his only scandalous thing about him and he was a Republican.

I think you have been heavily involved in the LDS church and could vote for Pete. I think thriller could. I think bucknutz could

I understand your general idea but in practice I know many of these people that you think couldn't vote for a gay man who absolutely could and would.

I think it has to be the right gay man though. Pete looks like a straight man. Acts like a straight man. Combat vet. No flamboyance to him at all. Straight laced. No one tells you he is gay and no one ever knows. The kids are safe. He wouldn't be converting anyone.

I would hope it could work the way you outline. I am being more of a realist about it though, and the anti-gay sentiment is pretty strong in society right now, especially certain corners of society. I just think getting a guy like Pete past the electorate is a very very tall order, right here right now. Maybe even in 4 or 8 years it will still be a tall order. Maybe we get more enlightened or there are no more "acceptable" candidates at the moment that could propel him into the presidency, but that is still a ways off, imho.

We have a thread for Jon Stewart but nothing for John Oliver's Last Week Tonight? I feel like his weekly episode deep dives into the ills of our society would generate some decent discussion.

Stewart goes to the black correspondent, whose name I forget. He’s tabulating the numerous things Republicans are saying about Harris.

Correspondent: “Harris is an American African!” Which is kinda scary, when you flip it around like that!”

I thought of you while watching that segment. He’s good, no doubt about it.

Funny and there is nothing new that was presented. Let me know when the left wing host does one of these comedy shows about Kamala.

If you think his views on Vaccines or AIDS out weigh the topics I agree with him on will make me change my mind, it will not. Seems like Oliver is worried that him being in the race will hurt Kamala.

Closing the border, free speech, shrinking the budget, including the military budget, helping actual Americans through his policy ideas are all positions I value over his Vaccine stance. You will not find a perfect politician.

It was quite refreshing to hear a politician actually answer questions. He can discuss almost all topics with depth.

Also I don’t agree with him being apart of the Trump administration in the HHS.

That'll happen when the material and impetus to do so exists. This show and John Stewart are both not afraid to go after Democrats and rightfully so.

Polling shows RFK Jr. is much more likely to steal Republican votes.

The funny thing is his policy positions are almost straight-line Democrat policy positions the only big difference is the anti-vax stuff and if you think he's going to make crypto happen I guess.

They do, just not with Kamala yet, I saw the 2nd Trump Term and RFK.

This I agree with. RFK is more socially left, yet has some right policies and has that “anti-vax” vote trickling in from the right.

He wants to shut the border down, add additional resources on the Mexico side to help with the asylum claims. Which I agree with as well. I know he wants to finish the wall and add additional personnel and technology there too.

Another big thing for me is he wants to have a cabinet with both left and right members and try the unity thing.

Thanks for the response!

I like all of that. Especially the final sentence.

I actually am not a fan of some of the line above. But, despite republican messaging, democrats are doing or are trying to do all of that.

And it really helps me like rfkjr in that he isn't the most corrupt, scandalous, and immoral candidate in the history of our country like trump.
trump can make any candidate look ok in comparison.
