What's new

Jonathan Simmons

I totally disagree. For starters, basketballreference.com has him playing SG for more than 90% of the time during his two years in the league, so you are basically guessing when you say he's a SF. Besides, for his career, at 10.6, Simmons PER is not only well bellow the league's average - which is 15.0 - but also decreased 11.9 to 9.9. So, basically, Simmons sucks statistically. He looks, to a certain extent, like someone who can create his own shot but nevertheless was assisted in more than half of those. Burks, in comparison, has been assisted in less than 40% of his shots. By the way, he and Burks are quite similar in many respects: they not only have same height, good to great athleticism, but also are inconsistent in their shooting both from mid-range and from outside. Simmons finishes better near the rim, but Burks has been truly awful at that the last few years. On the other hand, Burks is two years younger than Simmons. All in all, signing Simmons would be a very redundant move, IMO.

Ehh, I would call him more of a 3. He played next to Ginobili more than he did next to Kawhi (about equal tho). He is definitely someone who can be either, the problem is that he just cant shoot.

Log... That's the first intelligent thing I have ever heard come out of your mouth. Congrats. Here's looking to the future. It can only go up from last year's offseason predictions, eh?

Also, the Jazz let Diaw go 3 days before the deadline. That's more than most teams would have done.

Finally, Simmons plays the SF spot with the Spurs. He came off the bench behind Kawhi. I find it shocking that the Spurs didn't keep 'their guy' in Simmons. If the Jazz signed him to play the 3 spot behind Hood or as Hoodsurance then I would be thrilled. I think that a 2 year $20 million dollar contract would be stellar. I don't think I would pay any more than that given our current group and depth. But he would be a great grab to help out our weakest spot.

Hood (injury prone) often plays the 2 spot
Joe Johnson is amazing, but getting older and that 'hot box' stuff can only go so far before an injury comes plus he often plays the 4 spot for us
Joe Ingles is a specialty stretch player who played the 2 and the 3 depending on the lineups
Thabo is a defensive specialist who gives us depth

In a league with a zillion wings and guards, having Simmons would be fine. Necessary? NOPE. But it does appear we have the cap space for it and the timing is right with the Diaw move and the QO rejection from the Spurs.

Well thank you. We are all still waiting for your first intelligent post. Keep it up! You'll get there some day!

I thought Jingles showed over the 2nd half of the season that he had the chops to be a quality NBA starter. I expect him to get first shot at the job.

Gobert, Favors, Jingles, Hood and Rubio will get first crack at it.

Udoh, Jerebko, Joe Jesus, Sefalosha, Mitchell, Burks, Exum and Neto will round out the best bench in the league. Bradley, Bolomboy, Wallace and one more will play for the Stars.
This.
Gotta start rubio, hood, ingles, favs, and stifle

29% from three doe. (Simmons)

Did you guys watch any of the playing games? Simmons became the go to guy with kawhi down. He showed a ton of heart and really was the best offensive player besides perhaps ginobli for the rest of that series.

PS. Log, intelligent? How about last year's predictions for how the season would turn out when I guessed they would win between 50 and 52 games and if I had to pick a number I would pick 51...

That was when you posted piles of burning blue darts and predicted we wouldnt get close to making the playoffs and that George hill would be the worst starting point, and Joe Johnson was washed up. Hence you became the LOG.

exactly. When will people start to understand we are at a time in the NBA where there are 3 positions, not 5. And Mitchell is the most obvious case.

You have guards, wings and bigs. Mitchell is a guard.

This is mostly semantics. We have always had this kind of division. The thing you are seeing more now is players working to develop a broader skill-set, which blurs the lines a bit. But what was Magic Johnson? He is listed as a point guard, but he played all 5 positions very effectively, most famously in the first finals series he won when he literally played all 5 positions and dominated in the center spot to win it all. How about Barkley, who was far from a traditional "big". How about Drexler who is really the prototypical "wing" as we see them now. Hornacek was a prototypical "guard" as we see it now, being able to very effectively play both positions (he just happened to play alongside the best true PG to ever play the game, but he played a lot of point and "combo" on other teams and even for the Jazz gave us a 2nd playmaker on the floor). The biggest change IMO in the last few years is how much players and teams rely on the 3-ball. This is the most drastic change realistically. But there really isn't a difference in the positions. The tactics will change as time progresses and teams take advantage of their individual strengths. The 80's Lakers, for example, played a lot of small-ball but then could switch to half-court sets at will as well with Kareem in the middle. But take him out and they often ran with Rambis or Worthy at the 4/5 to get into the run-n-gun. You can see examples of it all over. The game does indeed evolve, but it is also somewhat cyclical. If the next dominant players (read the next Bron or Curry) happens to be a glut of traditional big-men it will shift yet again.

Wow, you guessed 51 and I guessed 47. So far off, I cannot believe it. I shall flagelate myself to help you with your self-esteem since you seem to feel a need for human blood to make yourself feel big in your little world. Welcome to 2017, 2016 is over if you didn't notice.

Still waiting for an intelligent post.

lmfao

obviously it's fair to say Zach Lowe would be predicting more than 50 wins if we were healthy at the time of his prediction.

He's obviously irrational

I have no doubt that there is a sizeable percentage of 3's that Mitchell can guard as well. In those matchups you could slot him as a 3. You are what you can defend.

47 wins IF EVERYTHING GOES JUST RIGHT.

Somehow, I don't think our starting PG missing half the season, Favors never getting healthy, missing Rudy and Hayward for multiple games would constitute as everything going just right.
