What's new

July 12th, Summer League Game 5: Jazz vs. Pacers *3rd place game* 10 AM ET

Lack of speed and lack of quickness? Those weren't his problems at all. He consistently stayed in front his man on defense, showing great footwork and quickness and was able to get into the paint with ease on offense.

Lol.

He looked a little slow to me

Question...do you watch NCAA basketball? You should not have concerns about his shot
Second question..what % of summer league players have you even heard of? Sucks when those guys are your team mates.

What I observed was a guy who came out of the gates in a shooting slump. SHots were for the most part rattling out. I observed several good passes from burke to morons who fumbled the ball out of bounds or chucked up an ill advised shot. I observed a PG who looked like he has the will and ability to defend. I observed a PG who found other ways to contribute in light of his struggles by playing quality D and chasing down rebounds. Most importantly...I observed a very proud player who had a bad showing and left an underwhelming impresion in some minds who is going to work his *** off hard to silence those who doubt him.

Have you seen my posts over 'there' yet?

I am not going to read TOO much into SL. I trust that the Jazz and others were pretty good in their evaluation of talent and Burke will turn out all right.

That said, if you watched the SL and came with away with zero concerns about Burke, then you are a blind ostrich. I am concerned about his apparent lack of speed, lack of quickness, and flat arc to his shot. I hope you are right, but an objective observer can have cause for concern.

It's OK to be concerned, and it is understandable. But let's not ignore last 2 years of spectacular results he put in either. Odds are still in our favor.

Honestly, not to me. I pretty much agree with green on this. Decision making needs work, but his quickness seemed fine.

I guess he had decent quickness (stop and start, side to side)
He just seemed slow in straight away fast break, run the floor type of speed..... but I guess that isn't too important for his position...... better to be quick and he does seem to have ok quickness

To me, Burke didn't look entirely comfortable with NBA 3-pt range. It sounds odd since he shot from that distance in college, but he's much more comfortable stepping in to college 3-pt range. That looks like a high-percentage shot for him. I don't think he's used to being defended that far out.

Wow!

It's amazing to me how many people are drunk off the kool-aid!

It's pretty obvious to me that Burke got hot in the NCAA tourney and became the "sexy" pick. Everyone ignored his weaknesses while exaggerated his strengths. He essentially became the Jimmer of 2013. Now that he has proven his worth in 4 games of summer league play, everyone is now making excuses.

It's pretty obvious to me that 4 games of summer league play, no structured offense, etc. He played with low post dominators, Pogo Stick and Stephen Colbert, and sharpshooters Trey Burks and Roberts that Alec Burke sucks. 4 games completely overturn whatever we watched in 2 years of NCAA hoops.

As Lavell Edwards said, "When you play with 2 quarterbacks you really have no quarterback." Same thing applies here. We still haven't a PG. I say we bring in Michael John Stockton and let him have a try. Also, resign Tinsley so he can start and teach these guys how to play. Hopefully next year we can get a high enough draft pick to draft us a new PG.

I think he was;
a) adjusting to the height, strength, and speed
b) uncomfortable with his team (just meaning they're not used to playing together and that makes it hard to be a facilitator)
c) some other stuff

Exactly. LOL

Evans, Burks and Gobert looked pretty decent, more or less meeting expectations.

Evans averaged 10 pts, 7 rebs, 2 ast, 1.3 stl, 1.3 blk, and shot 57% from the field. He didn't really have any bad games.

Burks averaged 14 pts, only 1.3 rebs, only 1 ast, and .7 stl, while shooting 41% from the field.

Gobert averaged 5 pts and 5 rebs, with 2.3 blks, shooting 58% from the floor. He only averaged 3 fga per game.

Chris Roberts was our leading scorer, averaging 14.7 pts on 52% shooting.

Kelly Olynyk (BOS), Reggie Jackson (OKC) and Andre Drummond (DET) had the best Summer League.

Here are the overall stats: https://www.nba.com/summerleague/2013/statistics/orlando/index.html

What I didn't understand why he didn't connect on alley hoops more often. Opposing defender were stepping between ball and the big to shield the low post entry passes. The Jazz had Gobert, Evans, Gaffney and Mbaye inside. All good leaper. Just gain confidence by making simple plays and collecting some assists. And when he drove he didn't use any advanced moves and missed loads of drop off pass and kick passes. It seemed he didn't look for it. I hope he works on that the rest of the summer.

I didn't get to watch much, but from the highlights, it seems like the Jazz were only trying to run a few plays over and over. Basically, they treated the games as scrimmages (which they were). I don't think anyone really cared about winning, just doing a few things well.

Also, regarding Burke, he's still pretty young, just a sophomore. Lillard was drafted after his senior year. Burke still has some development to do, and he's trying to learn the Jazz's system. He just didn't come in and nail it on the first try.
