What's new

July 7th, Summer League Game 1: Utah vs. Miami

Watched the whole game.

Burke definitely looked lost for most of the game. First looking to dominate and score without running the offense. He penetrated with no where to go a few times and his shot was off, but he did get to the line. He looked lost defensively too, getting hung up on screens and losing his man. He played much better in the second half, looking to get into the offense, and the two dump off's everyone has mentioned were pro.

Gobert did well today. He altered a lot of shots, played some good D (although he got lost a few times), and had a killer put back dunk in the first half. We'll see how well he does for the rest of SL, but he may get off the bench this season, maybe.

Overall it was the first game and both teams looked like ****. I'm excited for the rest.

yeah 1st half burke was over dribbling a ton and you could really tell the offense moved a lot smoother when he left hte game

i guess someone told him that the 2nd half and he dialed it back and the offense looked better

also should be noted we probably played the worst SL team in the league

varnado is their only nba caliber player

most of you guys act like you've never watched a summer league game. Burke was fine.. Holeeee ****.

If he isn't playing very well by the middle of the week, everyone neg me. Whiny bitches.

mcw??

We really didn't have a go to offensive guy after Burks left. We looked a little rough, but that is to be expected.
I saw a lot of positives from Burke. Obviously an off day shooting, and finishing. There are more ways to be
successful than scoring. I saw improvement from the 1st half to the 2nd half. Baby steps. Those last two dishes
were sweet.

I think everyone is missing the main takeaway from the game today:

The number of high-5's Gobert threw around! It was like he channeling his inner Steve Nash.

He plays hard and he's a great, encouraging teammate... whats not to like?

I watched the game and thought my expectations were probably tainted a bit by the excitement of the Burke pick. A lot of us have been on a bit of a high since draft night. I don't think it's fair to Burke to expect a lot from his first game, summer league or not. As was already mentioned, there really isn't an offensive scheme to speak of and a lot of players are looking to score to try and impress coaches and scouts in the building. I thought Burke showed good poise considering, and I'm not at all worried.

Gobert looked really good all things considered. He was exceptionally quick for an almost 7'2" guy and had good instincts defensively. I thought he was a little timid at times on defense, but I think he's going to be a solid backup.

I agree that Evans really didn't look good out there, and as much as I like the guy I just don't see him being in the NBA much longer. I hope I'm wrong.

I just watched the game on my DVR and here are my thoughts on the new guys:

Trey Burke Pros:
-quicker than I thought, has a good stop and go move to get into the lane
-decision making, wasn't trying to force anything that wasn't there
-Played well defensively and hustled to get to loose balls
-He knows how to get to the free throw line

Trey Burke cons:
-shooting but its just one game
-finishing at the rim was pretty bad, worse than I thought. This is the biggest concern
-Some passes were there on the pick and rolls, too conservative in alot of possessions

Was a pretty bad game but I am confident he will adjust accordinly and finish the summer league strong. It really didn't help that Carter-WIlliams had like 28 points and almost a triple double earlier in the day. Made Burke's game look much worse.

Rudy Gobert Pros:
-blocking shots
-pick and roll defense
-setting screens/rolling to the basket
-movement and footwork
-free throw shooting looked pretty good
-athletic for his size

Rudy Gobert Cons:
-position and rebounding, needs to lean to block out better
-no post up skills
-gets pushed around alot
-a great help defender but a few times he over rotated

Gobert looked good and showed he can play in the NBA. Very promising.

I am still on record for saying, if Gobert can put on the necessary weight, he can be better than Mark Eaton. After this game many of you can see why I said it.

Michael Carter Williams had 9 turn overs.

True.. I'm pretty glad we have Burke.. LOL ... low dribble, tight handle, good decision making...

Plus he's plenty quick for an NBA PG...that was my 1 main worry. He can get by that 1st defender with ease.. (he got by Kabongo who is no slouch)

To everyone who is overreacting to today's game:

Just saying, nbatv is replaying the games. Jazz should be on in like an hour and a half. It's currently boston and Orlando half way through the second quarter.

Mountain Time is two hours behind Eastern Time whether you're in Germany or not. But I didn't take 5 minutes to dig around so whatever.

Numberica - I like most of your post but why is it anyone's responsibility to make sure that you know when the game starts? It was posted over the internet and you could have turn on NBA TV and known what time it was. I think you are overreacting a bit. Besides they are playing replays of the game so you can catch the whole game if you want.

But I like how he was being aggressive.

He also shot 8-23. So his stats are a little misleading. I thought he did some good things but you had to watch the game to realize that his game wasn't as fantastic as the stat sheet makes it seem.

I wonder how his teammates who are trying to make a squad felt about their PG taking nearly every shot.
