July 7th, Summer League Game 1: Utah vs. Miami

If summer league meant anything then Mo Almond would be an nba all-star and favors would be in Europe.

There is that, but it doesn't work so well trying it the other way. Good players don't usually stink it up in the summer league. A more accurate gauge of a player's future performance is an*inability*to thrive in a summer league. If a player can't produce against the watered-down competition in the summer, he'll struggle mightily to get it done against real NBA players during the season.

It's also hard to compare the performances of different players in different games becuase in the SL, one game is 95-89 and the other 65-59. The Jazz were very much focusing on trying to run the offense and that set the tempo of the game. This 'forcing the offense' leads to diminished productivity in the short term (early on that is.) Burke had that fogged up look a little, becuase he was commanded to run the formalized offense and is required to initiate it. A couple of his long dribbles were him waiting for the other confused teammates to get in the right position. Then coupled with a bit of his own confusion, Jazz end up with an poorly executed possesion. Does this count for his shooting troubles - in a minor way, yes. If you believe that players can get "on track" or "get in the zone" then you can see with him trying to "just run the offense" that he was definately not in a zone. (Go rewatch NCAA tourney for some "in the zone" of TB3)

Gobert was a complete shock to me. Positively speaking. Not sure how long he's been playing the NBA style of PnR D, with the proper rotation, but it was clear he was given the command "play PnR D with all you've got - and ROTATE!!" It appears he can do as commanded. And it appears he's the quickest 7'2' dude I can recall ever seeing. Count me as one of the impressed. Whether he ever becomes (even a shadow of) Mark Eaton is another story. A key element to Mark's value was that he weighed 294lbs.

So let me see if I'm up to speed.

1- Burke is awful.
2- Jazz should have drafted Olynk.
3- It was game #1 of the summer league.

Did I miss anything?

We also beat the defending champs and should be organizing our parade through the streets of SLC next june.

Burke is a PG who thrives at getting others to score. Difficult to judge how good he is when the folks he's passing the ball to cannot score. Nor is it very possible for him to grt the ball where it needs to go without an offense. just look at how bad d-will has been without sloan.

Want to know what helps the PG out the most? Capable offensive players and a system. He doesn't have that.

To me, I just want Burke to stay healthy and play good defense in this summer league. I will reserve judgement for his offensive game when it's freezing cold outside and the inversion has settled in the wasatch valleys.

Basically.

And Burke sucks... Like really really bad. Oh and gobert is the next defensive player of the year.

Good post. Rep'd.

Coming in late. Seriously, just relax about Burke. He has the speed to get by his first man and having huge targets to dish to in Kanter and Favors will freeze the help defense enough for him to get his teardrop off. He will need to learn to flop, probably. I was at the RMR when Ostertag completely dominated Tim Duncan, and sat with a bunch of San Antonio fans that we met walking to the Delta Center. Half of those ninnys would have traded Tim for Ostertag straight across right then. Don't be a ninny.

Also I see no reason why we can't play Gobert right away against NBA bench big men. Excited to see him matchup against Olynyk.

Finally most of the people moaning about "missing on" Olynyk are the same people who whined relentlessly about all O no D from Big Al and Millsap. Seriously, just shut up already. We just extricated ourselves from that situation and just found the dominant defensive Center we have been pining for. Dare to believe!
