I find it interesting, the notion that the jazz should have drafted Kanter over Thompson or Leonard because Kanter was ranked higher by the media mock drafts. Shouldn't the teams make their own investigations and rankings? I hope that the jazz do their own and have the organizational strength to stick with it. Too bad if the teams fall back to a player they evaluate lower, just to keep their pick in line with popular opinion.

I was 100% against the Kanter pick from the get go and never felts happy about it.

Novak was a throw in not much expected. He led the league in 3's a while ago so maybe but probably not. Kanter is better off the bench. See him as a Jordan Hill kind of guy. They really LOVEEEEE adams, see him as the future. I remember on reddit everyone said that Steven Adams will be a top 8 center next year.

Those rose colored glasses are too tight. Look I get it as jazz fans we are programmed to accept our fate as a minor league team and to try to look at the positive. However, "promising european prospect" is way over the top for a 25 year old that OKC refused to bring over. The only asset that may make the team is the 1st rounder that will be very late. Most late first rounders dont make the team. Every blue moon you run into gobert and that is like winning the lottery. How many people hit the lottery twice?

We should have kept kanter and given ourselves time to find better trades.
 
I'm neutral on the trade. We didn't get much, but EK wasn't in our long-term plans and clearly there wasn't much market demand for him out there. At least we got something and paved the way for Rudy.

And I don't much mind that we "whiffed" on the #3 pick in the draft. It was an awful, awful draft. Kyrie was gone, nobody taken right after Enes was worth much more and nobody was going to take Klay or Kawhi at #3.

It is what it is.

Right. It's stupid to look back and say the Jazz should have fleeced someone by trading the #3 pick for a lower pick and a future first. They could have but given the transitioning state of the team, not trying to grab a new cornerstone would have been stupid. Imagine if Kanter had reached his projected potential. This team wouldn't have tanked, been rotating Favors-Kanter-Sap, have traded for a kick *** point guard or wing, and be the talk of the town.

Valanciunas was a good pick by Toronto. His stats are about what Kanter's are this season, although he's a better defender, I believe. And a legit 5. Kanter was a very good pick at #3 in that draft. We'd still be talking about him as a starter and hoping for him and Favors to continue to develop together...if not for Gobert. Rudy is the #1 reason Kanter demanded a trade. For those who still bitch and moan about losing a #3 pick, let's acknowledge that Rudy could very well be the BEST player from the 2013 draft. It was a helluva pick. Sure Giannis would have been a good pick, too But 13 other teams made the same mistake.

As I've said before, basketball is about competition. Kanter had his chances to man up, improve and be a great player for us. Favors had the same coaches as Kanter, so don't put all the blame on the Jazz not developing Kanter. That's a smokescreen. Kanter knows he's been beaten out by Rudy and wanted to go elsewhere. It's no different than a once highly-recruited college QB transferring schools because someone else has won the starting job. And it's no different than when Utah traded Green to make way for Stockton.

If we draft Russell and he beats out Exum or Hezonja and he forces Burks to ask for a trade, I'm all for it. If Utah can get a better player in free agency than someone they have right now, DO IT! And if Player X doesn't want to be with the team anymore - GOOD RIDDANCE!

It's not nothing, but it's not a whole lot. Kanter, for all his faults is still a 22 year old 6-11 guy who gets 14 and 7 in less than 30 mins. And we have him restricted next year. If you are given so little in return, just wait and try sign and trade. We got very very little for young talent we just lost.

How about picking players based on some kind of objective data and analysis? And hopefully that analysis discounts the value of Turkish D-League and Australian high school stats and scouting. That would decrease the amount/quality of divining required to make a good pick.

Except for the disrespect Kanter showed by publicly demanding a trade and then blowing a kiss at the media the other night. Kanter was going to be a cancer. There are very few S&T deals anymore. Besides, you are not factoring in what Ergul said about their belief that Enes is the best player of his generation. What team is going to offer him $15M and then trade us assets? If they want him at that price, they KNOW Utah isn't going to match, given Kanter's comments.

But I doubt it would even get that far. Kanter wouldn't risk Utah matching. And they know the cap is going way up in 2016. Enes would have signed the QO, been a distraction for another year and then left as an UFA. PERHAPS we could have received a late first by trading him at the deadline next season to a contender. Oh wait, we got that.

I also love the idea that the GM watch the mocks... The mocks are generally based off of what the GMs are saying to the mock writers. Thompson was looked at as a reach when drafted that high... Kwahi was predicted to go higher, but he landed in the perfect developmental situation, so who knows what he becomes if he is drafted by say Sacramento. He'd probably still be good, but that guy worked frickin hard to develop his game.

This is not a perfect science... it is really easy to go back in time and say we should have drafted player X.
 
All this kvetching and I'm sitting here joyous that Rudy Gobert will now be starting tonight and for the long foreseeable future. No more pity-starting Kanter.

How about also discounting the stats in some French league. Let's only draft players who have been on the best US college teams and led their teams to a deep run in the tourney. That way we can get great prospects like Trey Burke and avoid risky almost certain busts like Rudy Gobert.

Shouldn't even look at high school stats.
