What's new

Karl Malone, Greg Miller and Randy Rigby on 1280 Right Now!!

I am sorry to see Horny leave us and having Karl back in a limited role is good news. However, I hope he never becomes a full time coach. No way would Horny have brought him in. Karl gets emotional and flies of the handle whenever anyone hurts his feelings. And there is no evidence he can coach. There is years of proof that great players are often not good coaches. Even though I think Horny is going to be a good head coach, I saw no evidence that Horny made us a better shooting team - why is everyone convinced Karl will make Favors and Kanter better bigs? It could happen but not nearly as automatic as folks seem to think.

I guess you missed the quote from Horny talking about bringing Malone to Phoenix. The problem with Malone is he doesn't want to coach full-time. It isn't that he can coach. I recall Phil Jackson talking about how he thought Malone could be a coach. You are right about whether Malone can actually make a difference but it is too early to discount that he can't help/mentor our two young bigs. Look what KiKi V. did for Kanter over the summer.

Glad to see Greg finally do this. I've blasted Greg for not bringing Malone on board. Now I'll give credit where it's due.
Greg thank you for this move! Now it's in Karl's hands. If he ****s up or doesn't commit it's all on him.

This is exactly what I wanted. Maybe it brings John out of his cave too....

Didn't miss the quote but like others have said not sure it is legit or just talking so I still doubt Horny would hire him in that capacity. Easy to say when he knows Malone won't do it and Horny is always careful about saying the right thing given the audience. And Kiki is a very good coach and was a very smart player. Malone might be good as a specialist in teaching the young players. I would not want to see him as a bench coach so him not wanting to coach full time is a good thing IMO.

I caught some of the replay on my drive home and I would imagine those interested probably heard it live or found the 3 part podcast and listened to that.

From what I remember Malone and Greg both said there was no plan or time table on this, they would see how this part time of coaching the bigs went and go from there. They made a point that either side could walk away at anytime if either decided it wasn't working out or how they hoped.

Malone also said he didn't want to be a distraction as it would be fair to the team or the coaching staff and so at this time there was no plan for him to be in suit behind the bench (although even when Horny was doing his part time shooting thing with AK he would occasionally be in the arena for games just not behind the bench).

I don't think this move was done because of Horny leaving as evidenced by Favors already working out with Malone a few weeks ago but I do think this announcement was, along with it being a good PR move in the middle of a what would otherwise be a slow off season.

If anybody hasn't heard it I would definitely recommend a listen as I know reading other peoples recaps didn't do it justice. As well sometimes we all put our own spin or ideas or hear things we want to hear so you may hear something different then I or others that had posted on this.

I'm not sure this has been said yet, as it's way too early for me to read 8 pages of posts, but I think this move cements that we're moving forward with Favors and Kanter.

So glad this happened.

Greg Miller's thinking: "Oh ****, Phoenix is going to hire Karl and then Utah will revolt. Time to make him something so the fans continue to pay to watch this miserable team."
You are probably right. The timing on this is VERY suspect. I doubt it's just coincidence. And yes, perhaps Horny going to PHX will be the best thing to happen to the Jazz.

It has already been stated several times that Malone has already been working out w/ Favors.

Why is this so difficult to figure out?

Sure, but why didn't they announce that in the past? Karl has publicly begged to become involved in the organization. Why no announcement of his prior involvement. Just happens to be announced the week Horny leaves. I'm not buying that this was a complete coincidence, especially with Rigby involved.

Lol @ the twitter conversation about Enes between Kay Malone and one of her daughters

Karl alluded to teaching the young guys about some of his mistakes, and how he had to grow up. Young Karl was very.... uh.....entergetic.....much like Kanter. Maybe the Jazz were hoping Karl could persuade Enes to direct his enthusiasm towards basketball.

Yes he has... but I agree with those who feel that the timing on formalizing and announcing the agreement to continue to do so is a direct result of the Hornacek hiring. That's not necessarily a bad thing, though.

So, I guess cross this off the list of Corbin's accomplishments. Favors development has come from working with Karl, not from the wonderful guidance Ty has given the young guys. And I would credit Jefferson for Enes' improvement. The footwork and up and under move Kanter started to show was definitely Big Al-esque.

I kind of agree Colton, but I wouldn't attribute it just to Horny going. First off, the organization knew Horny was leaving for a while...no Horny or Lowe at Workout or Chicago combine. Next, Randy is scheduled to do that show every week. I think Jeff to the Suns was only part of it.

I feel like it was Rigby and Millers feeling pressure to get a positive story out there. Lowe in court, Jeff gone, KOC leaving...or is he?, Al selling his house, Jazz missed the playoffs, lots of people talking Burks vs-Leonard and Hayward vs- George. Jerry wants to coach again, Jazz did not move up in the lottery.... It has been a while since there was a positive story about the Jazz after a season full of fan discontent.

And since the Lindsey regime is buttoned down tighter than KOC there is NO draft rumours or workouts to announce. Jazz need to stay relevant.

Rigby--We want to create a forum for fans and owners to communicate.

Karl malone is happy to be 'back in the fold'
Randy...we already have one. It's called Jazzfanz. Please stop by and post anytime. I'm not a moderator, but I can pretty much guarantee they would waive the probationary requirements for you, Greg, Kevin or Dennis. If you're not sure how to sign up, ask that freak, Matt Harping. We're pretty sure he's been on here incognito. And judging from some of the Trib and Deseret News articles, we KNOW the Jazz beat writers visit here frequently. What say ye?
