Keyonte George Hype & Appreciation Thread

Time to bump this bad boy.

Key has not only looked really good in the preseason (if you forget about the complaining side of things)... but here are some small sample facts:
  • He is 2nd in plus minus and 4th in net rating on the team, and the only starter ahead of him in those stats is Lauri. This is huge contrast to last year, when he was one of the worst guys in those categories.
  • He has shot 51.4/44.0/87.5. Especially the 44% from 3 is promising, as he has done that on 6.3 attempts per game
  • He has averaged 24.3 points per 36 minutes thus far without dominating in a negative way
  • More of subjective opinion than a fact: I think he has played better defense than last year, apart from the moments when he complains and forgets to play completely
Is there a 2nd year leap coming? My money is firmly on: "Hell yes".

Keyonte looks like he's leveled up. I saw a quote where he says the game is slowing down for him, and I believe it. He's still going to make young player mistakes and he'll still struggle against good defenses, but I think he'll have a great season.

His game last night gave me a question:

Who will be our second leading scorer this year?

Before the pre-season, it wasn't really a question as it was almost certainly going to be Sexton. Now, I think it could be Keyonte.

I think thats a good question. Has to be one of those two, and the fact that I pause before I answer is already telling.

I would still go with Sexton though, but not with strong chest voice.

I think the answer is dependent completely on minutes. And because of that I think Keyonte will be the second leading scorer.

He's going to be very good. I eyeroll when I have to see the constant comments about him not running the team well. It takes guys who have been PGs their entire youth/college career to figure out being a NBA PG. Keyonte has been a PG at any level for one NBA season.

And I would add that he’s played much better as the main point guard this year.

He’s “doing it” rather than “trying to do it” which is what he was doing last year.

His ceiling has to at least be Jamaal Murray now.

I have never been one to stress "he's not a PG" because position labels are meaningless....I would say that in terms of his on ball abilities, his passing and playmaking is probably ahead of his scoring. That's not saying much though, he's one of the worst scorers in the league right now. The shot looks great but doesn't go in. He is a high turnover player, but tbh that's a symptom of a larger issue he has with focus.

Despite all the constant handwringing over if Keyonte can be a PG or not, he's averaging 7 APG for the Jazz and his APG have been trending up. If stays above 6 on the season (which seems likely), it will be the most APG by a Jazz player since Deron Williams.
I am not sure that these stats mean what you implied. First, there was a certain guard named Mike Conley who averaged 7.7 APG for the Jazz in 2022-23, Second, the only reason why Keyonte averages so many asists per game is because the Jazz force feed him heavy developmental minutes. The passing ability of Keyonte is good but nothing special. Currently, after 8 games, he averages 7.2 AST per 36 (according to Basketball Reference). Just last season the Jazz had four players who had higher AST per 36: Preston (8.1), Olynyk (7.7), Lofton (7.5), and Dunn (7.3).
