We all agree that Andrei is getting paid way too much, duh. After the end of the next season, would you want to resign AK to 7-8m a year, or try to dump his contract and get another player in return?

During the Jazz's run after December I believe they went like 18 or so and 3. A lot of that was because AK came back to form, he had a conversation with Jerry and they both met eye to eye. We saw the Kirilenko of old, getting blocks, steals, assists, and actually scoring on offense.

Would you try to hold off and give Kirilenko a decent contract for his value now, or would you try to get rid of him for whatever you can get out of his contract?

IMHO, I have always liked Kirilenko for what else he does on the court. His block shots and steals are a nice thing he brings to the team that no one else can really do. Millsap can block, but doesn't get the steals. Deron gets about a steal a game, but doesn't block. Deron can obviously pass, but can't play 4 positions. Kirilenko is the only all-around player the Jazz really has. The next closest player like him is CJ, but just to a much lesser extent. Kirilenko has been working on his shot, but I even cringe when I see him take a contested shot.

I guess to sum it up, would you give him 7m a year for what he does on defense?
 
Can't trade him until all the free agent fervor is over since most teams are currently going to be under the cap. There aren't many free agents in '11, but a looming lockout may have some teams in the mood to dump long term stuff to get AK's expiring.

Problem is, what would that long term stuff be? Arenas? Jamison? Maggette? Lewis? Turkoglu?

The only guy I can think of that would possibly work is Brand, and I'm not thrilled with that. No way you can trade AK for Iggy.

Makes me think the Jazz keep him and hope he has a very good, injury free season.

I don't. If he's playing like a starter, he's going to want big bucks. And the big Russian over in NJ will probably give him $12M/per. Can you imagine how many AK jerseys Prokhorov will sell in Russia? AK will be the ambassador for the Nets. Prokhorov will have him making all kinds of appearances in Russia during the off-season. He's worth maybe $6M/per in terms of his declining skills, but at least $6M on top of that to Prokhorov in helping to establish the Nets as "The Team" in Russia - similar to the how Houston and Ming have been revered in China.

I don't know which players will be available at the deadline. I relaize 2010 was unique in that teams were trying to clear space for Lebron, Wade, etc. But AK's salary could bring a guy like Hayward or a late lottery pick. Teams always look to clear salaries. We may not get an all-star, but that doesn't mean Utah needs to trade for bad contracts like Arenas or Turkoglu. If Boozer and Korver don't return, Utah should be pretty close to the tax threshold. Maybe they'd be able to take back say $10M in a trade + get a pcik and the other team gets the $17M in cap relief for 2011.

I think this AK to the Nets is very overblown. Prokhorov is a businessman first, countryman second. He also seems the competitive sort, so his goal is a championship, not jersey sales in St. Petersburg. I doubt he'll go for AK at 12 mil. That's also assuming he doesn't fill up to the salary cap this year on free agents.

The reasons teams clear salary is to rebuild or dump long term salary. No way a team missing the playoffs gives up a lotto pick for AK. I doubt a team gives up a pick to take on AK before the year starts.

I can't think of a team 7 mil under the cap is going to trade 10 mil for 17 mil, even if that 10 mil is for 2 more years.

I have to admit that I remained an AK fan through the years. I don't care about his salary, because I'm not paying it myself. At the moment when the contract was signed everyone knew it was a little too much, but AK's potential was worth it. Remember that he was the only bright spot on the Jazz roster those days.

Of course he's not worth the amount the Jazz is paying now, and his next contract won't be that high. If the Jazz can make a new contract with reasonable lenght (3 years) and at a price range of 7-8.5 mil., I think it would be cool.

Andrei is a good team player. A extremely nice piece of the puzzle to have around for a championship calibre team.

GlassEater probably is right, I see Prokhorov making a high offer to AK so he can present him as the face of the Nets in Russia. But even with that offer, I see AK giving priority to the Jazz on contract negotiations if they show him some love.
 
A lot depends on how he plays in the coming year. If he can play like he did during that stretch from Jan-March, and remains relatively injury free for most of the season, I see the Jazz offering him at least 10 milllion. If he shows decline and more injuries, I think the Jazz will let him walk.
 
If the Jazz offer Kirilenko ten million I will go berserk.

Lamar Odom is on 7.5ish and he is a key contributor on a championship team. Is less enigmatic and considerably more durable over the past three seasons.

Personally, I can't wait to be rid of that gangly, fragile, albatross.
 
I think at half the price he is a great player.

I suspect that after a little posturing he would agree.

I also think that part of his problem has been trying to live up to the contract.

I suspect that he would re-sign for half the price and be a good value. I say do it if they can.
 
I love AK's game, but the guy has glass ankles and problems with back spasms every year. Those don't look like they are going away either. We need to trade him.

Of course, Prokhorov will offer him $10 mil./per.
 
Honestly, if the Jazz can resign him for 5-7 million, I bet he has a better tenure with the Jazz over that contract than he has with his current contract. He's been so worried about being the man on this team because of the money he makes that he doesn't stick to what he's best at.

If he is making less money, he'll realize he doesn't need to score 20 points every night and can go back to recording 5x5's.
 
AK's situation is a catch-22. If he plays well, his value goes up in the offseason, but more significantly it goes up as a chip to obtain cap relief at the deadline. I'd love to keep him at the right price, but I see him getting dealt, and I see him being valuable in free agency. I don't see him coming back to us if he gets dealt. The best way to keep him would be to resign him before his contract lapses if he was inclined. But I don't know how much interest the Jazz would have in that. It's worth a little meeting, though, to see if he's happy enough in Utah to offer a hometown discount. There's no question we're a better team with him, but we're handicapped by his present contract as well.
