KOC's Method of Negotiation

Ok, we need to move on, or I do, about not signing Matthews.

However, I think it's time to question KOC's method of "negotiation," in letting the market decide. As one poster put it, and I think it might've been on another site, it leaves the small market teams at the mercy of the larger market teams with more money.

Isn't it better to negotiate with the players you want, to assure them you want them back, and isn't it human nature that guys will take less to stay with the team they like and are comfortable playing for, and who they are going to get guaranteed playing time because they know their role and they fit well? So, you lock them up with a fair offer and don't worry about getting raped by other teams.

It's happened two years in a row now with Portland. Is KOC going to learn his lesson or continue being a weasel?

Bargaining in good faith worked for many years with Stockton. Don't see why it can't work again.

Stockton is the most underpaid player in the history of the NBA. That's why it won't work.

If Portland is intent on blowing their money for our borderline starters, perhaps the Jazz need to make a preliminary offer. Otherwise, they did exactly what they should've.

I wasn't happy when my mother took my Teddy Bear away, either. There was no negotiation on the matter. She just took it, and it wasn't fair. But guess what? I got another one. It was hard to get used to, sure. But I got over it and wound up liking it pretty much the same.

So, it's your nature to stay at your job for a decent raise and decline an offer from a competitor whose offer blows your current employer and their new compensation offer out of the water, and you'd be doing the same job?

You guys are so thick. You don't get the point. There's a chance we lost in this matter, if Matthews develops into a great player. Apparently, Portland is very high on him. I still say a good GM who knows how to negotiate could've gotten Matthews for a lot less. Matthews himself has admitted this. KOC is just good at covering his ineptitude.

That's not his position. His position is that he would rather have been suckered into getting the decent raise without ever knowing he could have doubled it elsewhere by an employer who was negotiating in 'good faith.'

So what offer should they have made that a)would have been overall better than Raja Bell's deal. b) been good enough that Wes wouldn't have looked anywhere at all?

Matthews wanted his cake and eat her, too. He got an incredible offer, agreed to it, and now cries because the Jazz didn't give him the same offer? Matthews should just call Jerry Sloan, thank him for making him a rich man, and then count his blessings. I've read comments that the Jazz should have offered between $3-4M per. Would Matthews have accepted that, given what Portland gave him? I doubt it. Even if he did, I still think $3-4M per for a one year guy is way too much. I hope he does well. I like him and I have no ill-will toward anyone who leaves for a better situation. Just don't burn the bridge when you leave.

Again, you're looking at the short term, plus there are other factors to consider besides money here. It's not about how much money, but also how it affects your career, and in the long term this does affect how much money you make. I don't see this as a good career decision for Matthews, and now he is realizing it. It also probably is not going to be a good decision long-term for the Jazz. Like I said, Raja will be good for a couple of years. But I can't wait to see you guys eat your words down the line.

The point of this thread is not Matthews. It's about KOC and how he negotiates. The proof is in the pudding. It's opening us to getting raped. It's making us vulnerable to losing players that we want. It's not smart; it's trying to low ball people and getting them on the cheap. It's not respectable and shows a lack of integrity.

Isn't the guy they drafted at #9 their long term plan? Why tie up Matthews, who is still unproven, when they have a guy they liked so much they took him at #9? Bell is a stop gap. Matthews could have been a long term mistake. The Deacon is the answer. Fast offerings.

My main gripe is the reactive and not proactive approach. Hindsight will always be easier to understand details that weren't there at the time this all went down in real time. I think KOC needs to at least put an offer out, even if it's a low ball. Had they offered $2mill Portland would have been less inclined to be so aggressive perhaps in their raise. This could have amounted to Utah matching a lesser offer than what they were forced to decide on. All in all, it's not a catastrophic loss, but I think it could have been far better handled. I think Wes wanted to be here... But congrats to him on his pay raise. He'll be as great as Portland will allow him to be I think. But he woulda been better here fo sho.

Hard to form an opinion on KOC's approach based on the little bit of information we get. KOC called Mathews agent the night of FA--that call probably set the stage for the process and who knows what was said in the call.
