Las Vegas Summer League Game Thread: July 11th - Utah Jazz vs. Miami Heat 7:30 PM PST

I was at the games and noted his struggles. But his shots are all on-line. He's very active on both ends. He runs the floor very well and leaks out on transition. Most of the issues should be correctable with coaching. FWIW I saw several high draft picks today with respective issues. Calling them busts at this stage is just premature and immature.
 
Hated the pick and still do, but making definitive judgments about a 19 year old after a couple SL games is ridiculous. It's going to take a few years before we know if we blew this pick. I hate the idea of drafting a player with the idea of teaching him how to shoot when we desperately needed shooting, but right now I think DL and coach Q deserve the benefit of the doubt. Some of you would trade Exum for a bright new Penny, so the expectations for rookies isn't always too realistic. Let's say we give him one or two more summer games before we declare disaster

After I watched Portis drain two threes in row I threw up in my mouth a little.
 
People here so quick to judge. We are complaining about a guy why has 17 free throws attempted in under 48 minutes played.

Neither am I. I just thought Portis played well. He showed a lot of the qualities I thought we wanted/needed.

Should be interesting to see how the rest of SL plays out.
 
Shabazz Napier. UConn. Another pg that was supposed to be way better then Bryce Cotton. Not bad, but Cotton outplayed him, IMO.....

Point guard Shabazz Napier manufactured 14 points—eight of which came from the charity stripe—and dished out a team-high four assists with just two turnovers. The distributing proficiency was rare on a day when turnovers seemed rampant in Vegas.

But it was another floor general who stole the show even in defeat. Bryce Cotton spent last year as a D-League All-Star and could be in line for a permanent promotion to the Association if he keeps playing like he did Saturday en route to 28 points.

KSL.com's Ben Anderson believes Cotton is worthy of an NBA roster spot in Salt Lake City:

There is just no way Cotton isn't on this team on opening night. Regardless of how many PG's the Jazz have.

Cotton played in 15 games for Utah in 2014-15 and may well work his way into the Jazz's rotation this next year—or he could find a place elsewhere. It's hard for anyone to ignore how he's dominated the sub-NBA competition last season and now.

Dante Exum is still too young and talented to write off, but some may see Cotton and believe he'd be a better long-term option than the to-date disappointing Trey Burke. At least Utah has the enviable problem of a point guard surplus—though one could argue Exum is better suited for the 2—in an era where the NBA is stacked at the position."

Cotton has been the quickest player on the floor through 4 games. At this level at least, who's doing a great job guarding him? Yeah, should have dunked that layup, agreed. But if you have to play your way onto a roster, Cotton sure is trying hard to make that case. Lindsey stated, I believe it was yesterday, that the Jazz would "absolutely" carry 4 PG's if it came down to it.

I scream they have 10 fouls to give each! Don't care about that. I'm not one time say this guy is bust just don't like him, didn't need him and there are better options. when I say waste I mean he should not take him wth so much better players on the board.
 
I know when Trey was drafted, probably no one on this board was more amped about it than me. Y'all are seriously tripping though.

Lyles was pressing a bit or slightly spooked. Which isn't the worst thing, it happens, let him get that out of the way. I'm sure he's furious about that showing...

Ya gotta remember - he's just getting his feet wet.

The Summer League is where NBA Legends such as Von Wafer, John Salmons and Josh Selby win MVP's.

Where Michael Beasley dropped 28 in his debut in 20 minutes vs a sub-par showing from Derrick Rose(which I'm sure SOME tried to draw conclusions over)..

Didn't Durant have a rather unspectacular SL??
