Last Restaurant You Ate At?

My gf and I just ate at J and C House in Riverton. They make great sushi and I definitely recommend it. 10x's better and cheaper than Tsunami.
Do they have a lot of sushi that is predominately a solid piece of raw fish or is most of it spicy tuna, shrimp tempura or crab? Did you try any nigiri?

I'm kind of a sushi newb so I couldn't tell you. Their menu is pretty big though. I didn't try their nigiri (not even sure if the have it) but tried it for the first time in La Jolla a few months ago. Nomnomnom

I looked at their menu, it is pretty huge.

I'd put them in the camp of places where the vast majority of their specialty rolls DO have spicy tuna, tempura shrimp or crab on them. That's not bad and I like spicy tuna and crab just fine, but it is generally pre-prepared and helps them get stuff out faster. I prefer rolls that feature solid pieces of fish and I really don't like tempura on a roll at all.

That said, I think my family would like that place and the prices are reasonable. They have a big menu of nigiri, which is 90% of what I want at a sushi place. Nigiri is the piece of fish placed on top of a rice ball (see pic). I'll often order some maguru and hamachi nigiri as soon as I sit down in a sushi place I've never been before deciding what I'll order at that place, as it's a good indication of the quality of their fish.

By the way, if anyone likes Thai food, give Thailao on Redwood a try. They have new owners, and they currently serve the best Thai food I've ever had. Their Lao food is also fantastic, for the more adventurous types.

Have you been to New Thai Cafe? If so, you feel that Thailao is solidly better?

I typically go out to eat by myself on the weekends -- mostly to go to places I like that my family doesn't like, like Hot Dynasty...sigh -- and will definitely try them.

Do you ever get Nam Tok (waterfall of beef)? I really like that dish at New Thai Cafe and will probably order it for comparisons sake.

I have not been, but I'll give it a go on my lunch break on Monday (have other obligations tomorrow).

I haven't tried nam tok. But it looks very similar to a dish they call sap-sap steak. And it's great. They also have beef laap, which is a bit different (finely ground beef), but it is fantastic. Even their pad thai is excellent. The papaya salad is also awesome.

If you're in the mood for soup, try khao piek sen. It's a favorite of mine.

Also, when they say spicy, they mean it. I usually do 5/10. One time I made the mistake of insisting on 10, and my papaya salad was more of Thai pepper salad.

P.S. I actually prefer to go to restaurants on my own. I'll go to Pizza Rev with a co-worker every Friday because he seems to enjoy it, and I'm nice. Saw fish there a couple of weeks ago with his adorable baby.

PSS Thailao put cucumbers in their water, which is super.

I've actually started to really look forward to my solo restaurant outings. On Saturdays I usually leave before anyone else in my house is up. It's no stress. Cheaper, too.

Patrizia's in Red Bank, NJ. It's a BYOB. Feels a little too chainish (they do have 6-7 locations I think) and too family-ish for my liking. A lot of younger kids there.

In general, the food was good. Big portions. My wife and I shared a calamari. It was huge. Huge. And really solid. For my entree, I got the Lobster Fra Diavlo. It had about 1.5 pounds of lobster in it along with some other ****. Clams and mussels mostly I think. It was very solid. I probably wouldn't go again though. Didn't feel like a setting for an adult date. The food was "mature" for the most part but there were just too many kids there. Will maybe go when the three kids are a little older.

I think I know what you mean, here's some fish soup I ordered in Hong Kong. They triple checked that I really wanted it and that I knew it was spicy. The pic is after I ate most of the fish. I didn't chow down on the remaining 1lb of dried chilies, and they weren't even Thai chilies or anything.

Thailao was awesome! I'll go back but figure I'll sneak back by myself.

So there are three different really good Thai places I'm familiar with. New Thai Cafe, Thai Delight and now Thailao. What's really cool is that they all stand out for different dishes and have different styles. I'd go to each one for different reasons. Can't say I'd rank any of them above the others.

So we got to Thailao kind of late. Nearly 8:30 and they close at 9. I hate doing that but I had to wait for my wife to get home from work and then she took a minute before she was ready to head out. But they were really nice and didn't seem put out. There were a few other tables there and seems like they got there just before we did.

I got the Beef Larb. That's not exactly how it's listed on the menu but close enough. It was really awesome. It is similar to nam tok for sure, especially the way they make it, with mint, lime, toasted rice and beef. Their larb meat was not as finely minced as I've had other places, which I liked. My wife got the Sap Sap steak. It was really good, it came with a dipping sauce for the meat that was really good. My kid was lame and got Pho and ended up not liking it. I tasted the broth and it was really good. There was some cinnamon I believe and overall it was really aromatic and flavorful. Guess a little too flavorful for my kid. I liked that it was heavy on broth and light on noodles. I really hate when there's too many noodles in pho. We also got pot stickers, and they were just so-so. Got some Tom Yum Gai soup. Loved it, but it is as good at New Thai Cafe and better at Thai Delight. I love Tom Yum, so it's hard to go wrong. For anyone that doesn't know it is a hot and sour soup with lemongrass and lime leaves, fresh tomato, mushrooms and in this case chicken, but is also frequently served with shrimp or both.

They had a condiment tray that had chili oil, sriracha, fish sauce, soy sauce, something that was like sweet msg, dried chili powder, and then two jars with pickled peppers, one had small green chilies in a vinegar sauce, the other had red chilies and garlic in a vinegar sauce. Yummy.

wanna take the girl here but she'll freak at the price and i'll never hear the end of it.

That is reasonable to freak out, that is a waste of money. Good food should never cost that much. I rarely like high end restaurants food or think it is worth the money even though I get talked into going a couple times a year. Especially the wine prices. Expensive wine is a joke.

man its not like its every weekend. 150 to 200 bucks is pretty standard for a good feed for two here, sometimes its nice to do something special.

It's really not THAT outrageous. Just a standard high quality steakhouse costs ~$120 for two people, without any fancy wine. And that's in USD, not Australian peasant currency.
