Denying people masterbation is ridiculous. Almost all men have done it mormon or not.
I used to hear my friends talk about how they lied during their temple recommend, preisthood interviews with the bishop.
Also, on theie mission I've been told most do it.

You aren't going to stop a teenage boy throbbing desires no matter how bad you want to. Just suppress them as much as possible,
and keep it under the covers so to speak. :o

It has to be done.
It's the brain and bodies natural make up to procreate.
The urge builds up in the body until it's impossible not to.

I remember being a kid and feeling bad for doing it, but as you get older you understand that's it's just a natural action.

The most basic instinct for human beings is the temptation of the forbidden. Most religions have a spiritual/philosophical depth on their way of comprehending the reality, but religious propagators that represent religious institutions deformate those deep meaningful lines as strict rules that are impossible to be broken, so that anyone who breaks it goes against the will of their religion's society and their religious leaders, therefore they'll be punished and the institutionalized interest ranks are the winners. Religions have way deeper understanding level and a context way deeper to be understood, but it's for individuals to have the desire to search for them. Everyday life is not suitable for it. But let me summarize the most important part for you, save you some time: The most important thing is your intention in your acts. Nothing else. Screw anything you believe. There are poopload of beliefs in the face of the earth. What matters is always the same. Whatever you do, wrong or right, have the best intention, goodwill.

Now this is intriguing. I have a friend who considers himself a very devout Christian despite having sex regularly with his girlfriend. He talked about how he gets Atonement through the death of Jesus Christ as his saviour, and his sins are pardoned because of this. As a Muslim, I am not familiar with how this argument can be picked apart; can someone else do it for me? Or is he correct? That'd be pretty awesome if he is, seeing as you can technically do anything and still be forgiven.

He probably has a juvenile understanding of it then. Every Christian has probably been in a similar scenario. Not the sex thing specifically, but looking for a way to have their cake and eat it too. I thought similarly years ago too. It won't work however because God knows your heart. God knows when you're gaming him. It doesn't work because freeing yourself from sin is not an instantaneous thing. If you have sex with your girlfriend, repent, then don't for a week, maybe you'll feel some inner encouragement during the interim because that might be a big effort for you personally based upon your recent actions, then all of of sudden, you'll be even worse off again once you give in habitually because you're just building on that false belief not on actual spiritual growth. You're showing weakness. You're lying to God. Your sin has become a habit. You didn't turn away from anything. Your repentance meant nothing when your relapse is simply predicated on scheduled visits from your girlfriend. Your intention has always been to have pre-martial sex again. And God knew that already. Repentance isn't a momentary sorry/confession to God, it's a process, it's saying goodbye to something with the best of your ability, it's making a commitment. That's the only way it works.

Many people say they are Christians but choose to follow Christ at their whim, which is their decision. But what they are really saying is simply that they believe. That's it. That's not a being a Christian. That's not earthly salvation. You're not following Christ. You don't have that connection. Whether God accepts your simple belief as entrance to any afterlife is probably dependent upon so many different variables that nobody really knows. Everybody is not going to be given the same grace as the thief on the cross. Maybe it works out in the end for that kid you know because he has so many holes in his understanding and is never taught correctly, or had so many poor examples, or whatever the case may end up being. But if ever knows better......

They can get back to good standing after doing whatever they want, but that sill requires them to fully commit at some point, which is not a given. It's not an easy thing. And the more you head down one path, the harder it is to climb back up. The issue is that they've missed out on years and years of spiritual development. Years and years of heavenly guidance. Years and years of pure joy. Their life can still end up being good in its own way, but it likely could have been even better if they were more aligned with God throughout. The beauty of God though is that he'll make you happy wherever you get to in life regardless of your circumstances. It's just better for anyone's life to be as connected as soon you can be ASAP. He always watches over the vessel, regardless of who you are, but you have to invite in him to the vessel and maintain some personal dignity to really experience God and really grow.
