Well with an App you also get free calling. So if you're calling someone overseas, you get free calling via the App, whereas if you only have the phone you'll have to pay International calling rates.

I live in a huge country where I don't have to call anyone overseas.
Also, I have called China a few times and haven't paid extra. I wonder why?
Oh ok, then you don't need an App.
But with an App. it's easier to share photos, etc, as well. You can also set up a 'group' and share information or comments or breaking news, etc. It's more convenient

I have facebook messenger. Don't use it much though.
