There was a big push to convert to metric back in the 80's. Every speed limit sign was listed in miles and k's for instance. It seemed to be going well. Metric was being used more and more frequently. Then suddenly they took all the metric signs down and the push to adopt metric ended. I don't know why. It was a dumb decision, though.
