Life - official thread

English system is superior outside scientific reasons cause of practical use. I know what one hunnerd degrees is but wtf is 37.778? I know what one hunnerd lbs is but wtf is 45.359 kg?

The scale extension makes easy for common communication.
Oh, this makes so much sense. Yeah, let's stick with the English system because things currently associated with the number 100 are so important to Boris.

So you disagree with using a practical system for daily use? Sounds like 9th grade biology teacher pounded that in to your head real good.

I started my professional career in the U.S. Navy, where obviously everything uses the English system. Well, almost. We have this funny agreement with some Euro countries called NATO, and since we share certain hardware with them we do use the metric system on occasion.

Outside the Navy I worked in the semiconductor industry, primarily on Japanese made Kokusai and Tokyo Electron Limited diffusion furnaces, which obviously use metric. After that I now work at Dannon, a French owned company, on packaging equipment that is mostly made in France, so again, metric.

I prefer metric by so much it's not even funny. I wish we could stop bothering the rest of the world with our "freedom units" and get on the metric train already.

I still think of temperatures in F and distance in Miles, but I could get over that pretty fast if we finally made the switch.

Your claims of impracticality would make a lot more sense if you could point out people using the metric system who say it's impractical. Meanwhile, can you tell me how many yards are in a mile? How many pounds are in a ton? How many pints are in a gallon? The relationships between these measurements are nonsensical and impractical.

For what it's worth, I'm a scientist and love the metric system as much as the next guy. And yet, there's still something to be said in using units that give "nice" numbers for things that you do all the time.

So in scientific experiments off the top of my head I often use:
mT instead of T for magnetic field
mbar instead of Pa for pressure
mW instead of W for laser power
mA instead of A for current
GHz instead of Hz for frequency
and so forth

Granted those are all metric based (although bonus points get awarded to those who knew 1 mbar = 100 Pa without looking it up), but I also often use:
eV instead of J for energy
amu instead of kg for mass
atm instead of bar or Pa for pressure
"beta" (v/c) instead of v for velocity
light years instead of m for distance
and so forth

which aren't really related to metric units at all. And heck, I've even got a scientific vacuum gauge that measures pressure in "inches of mercury". Go figure!

So I completely understand those who want to keep using English units for everyday life because they are often more convenient than their metric counterparts. (And frankly I feel that same way about deg. F myself, most days. Not a huge deg. C fan.)

Your claims of impracticality would make a lot more sense if you could point me to one not whiny baby using the English system who says it is impractical. You like to cry about things, I get that. When was the last time I had to convetrt a gallon of gas or milk in to pints? Never. When was the last time I had to convert yards in to miles? Never.

Keep crying. I will keep trying to convert my pints of ale into gallons cause it matters so much to obsessive compulsive disorder Joe.

Well, I knew a scientist would know these answers. Maybe you will also know why there was a big push to convert to metric (which makes sense not only because it's sensible but also because it matches the rest of the world) and then they suddenly pulled the plug.

Do they? Clearly not the case in 'Love Actually' though... they clearly think ALL American girls are hot and easy and available.

Wtf is "love actually"... Never mind.

Yes, American girls are hot and easy... But so are hot girls from every other corner of the world. Thanks to them, btw.

'Love Actually' is a legendary British Rom Com .... (I cry every time I watch it, actually, so emotional, especially the scene where Colin Firth proposed to the Portuguese girl, gets me every single time).

Not sure how the film accurately portray the scene in Milwaukee though... but it does seem plausible.
