What's new

like a deer in headlights

Devin Booker has regressed in a lot of people's eyes and he is another player who is allowed to play through mistakes and given the reigns without much pressure. His shooting % are only slightly better than Exum's.

Still waiting on all these skills. Lemme guess, he can play really good defense...and???

He has a strong basketball IQ
He gets into the paint very well for a player his size
His handle is good for a player his size
He has shown an aptitude for cutting off ball to the basket
He has defensive intangibles
He has shown passing vision on drives

Plenty of skills, they are not fully developed and he needs more time on ball to fail. The problem is the team has advanced past him and it's increasingly difficult for that development time to happen. Emmanuel Mudiay is given these chances and he has mostly sucked, because he is learning, but he has started showing development recently. These things just take time.

This is the list you're going with?

Listen, things do take time. I can acknowledge that. But that said, I think you know I don't mince words. So let me just say that while I generally dislike Computer as a poster on this site, he is spot ****ing on here about Exum.

They do?

What rookie is "lighting it up" right now?

Lmao.

Ok, I'll play along. You said these kids OFTEN step in and light it up right away. You named one player. Name some more. After that, try and name all the players who had several years to develop in college, yet came into the NBA and struggled to fit in.

Jimmer Fredette looked like a total stud in college, to the degree he was named player of the year, yet couldn't find a place in the NBA. How about Trey Burke?

You want to compare how high school players and college players look against far inferior competition to how Dante looks in the NBA?

Yeah, you and the others who have given up on Dante definitely have completely unrealistic ideas of development for a player in Dante's position, coming back from a serious injury.

Exum will be starting for the Jazz in 2-3 years and will be playing well above average for his position in the league.

He has all the physical tools, all the intelligence and all the hard work to be a really good player. He is a slow developer and taking 2 years off from Basketball and his injury slowed him down a bit.

And you base your assessment of hard work, physical tools and intelligence on what? On the fact he's tall and runs fast? Good gawd, when are you apologists going to hold Exum accountable. That year "off" was supposedly spent working on his game. It's not like he went on a walkabout in the Outback. Dante had a great international performance which vaulted him into the draft. In that respect he was kind of like Arroyo. Utah bought into the hype. To me, Dante has always looked out of shape, even before the injury. And he can't shoot. Both of those factors indicate he's not a very hard worker. Yes, he had the injury. Yes, he was unable to lay for a while. But LONG before he was cleared for contact or running, he would have been back on the court shooting.

I hope you're right. But right now, it's more likely he's a bust (and by that I mean a career backup or very low end starter).

I agree with most of the ones you've listed. I do NOT agree with the handle. Handle is something you cannot rely on flashes for. It needs to be continuously solid and secure, because one flash will get you out of a situation, but the lack of consistency will screw you up in the long run.

what's your definition of can't shoot ? Tony Allen type can't shoot ? Ricky Rubio ?

his free throw % would suggest theres every chance he can become an adequate shooter

I feel like there is a difference between free throws and shots taken during the game.
I could shoot over 80% from the line in the nba but I would have a horrible percentage from the field. Unless defenses just chose not to guard me at all.

I named more than one thereafter.

And yet these kids step into the NBA after their one year having been removed from high school and often light it up just as thought.

"Often" come on..... almost all rookies suck in their first year, even the ones destined to be really good. There are few exceptions.

Buddy Hield, a guy who a lot of people (including CL) thought was NBA ready after a 4 year college career, is struggling his *** off in the NBA. It's the top competition in the world. Players need time to develop and the NBA is increasingly becoming less forgiving for rookies.

Heard that the game volume might decrease tho. That might help the rooks a bit about rookie wall.

Good in and out dribble. Doesnt finish but still a nice move.

Maybe my favorite Exum move of the year. Crosses up Wade goes up high and focuses on the rim to finish through Lopez.

Also the slight head fake/hesitation to get Conley to jump was nice here.

And the rare pull up midrange attempt. Dont see getting it off being an issue.

A lot of the plays I see from Exum is that he does nice stuff to get into the paint, but he either picks up his dribble a step too early and barely misses finishes. I expect that these will start to drop more frequently at some point once he gets more comfortable then you have a pretty good player on your hands.
