Locke interviews Hayward

Just went through and looked at the #3 scorers on each team (looking at end-of-season rosters). 20 of 30 #3 scorers are not on rookie scale contracts. The average salary of these players this season was $10.6mm (using Boozer, not DJ Augustin, as Chicago's #3 scorer). A couple of these players also serve key defensive roles: Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka. A bunch are considered terrible contracts: Bargnani, Carlos, David Lee, Rudy Gay, Eric Gordon (Deron, Deng, Bosh?).

The average salary of all 30 #3 scorers this season was $7.9mm.

Paying a player who is neither an offensive hub nor a defensive stopper $12mm+ per season is not smart.

You didn't take into account the natural rise in salaries from when they received their contracts until now. If $10.6 mill is the average for #3's not on rookie contracts, then a bit higher than that may still be an OK value. And even though Hayward lacks defensive stopping ability he does have some playmaking ability which adds to his value.

That being said, I'm really hoping the Jazz sign him for $10 mill or less.

Poor Hayward.
He came on the day when there's an activity by a religious group near his hotel which always causes terrible traffic.

As much as I would want to go, the mere fact that there's this activity on going I had to skip seeing Hayward. It will take me at least 4 hours going to the area where he is staying.

$63mm?

If you have two players worthy of the max, isn't an actual knock-down shooter or perimeter stopper more valuable than Hayward? Can't those players generally be had for less?

If you're paying your top 4 ~$60mm, as you've suggested, you're left with ~$20mm under the tax to add ~10 players. That's not much.

It make might sense to match an offer sheet that pays Hayward $12mm per year, but I find it hard to believe he'll be worth nearly that much on a good team.

What role(s) do you see Hayward filling on a team with 2+ better on-ball players?

I think Hayward can fix his shot.

I see value in a guy who can do something when chased off the line. Remember how Giricek couldn't do jack when he had to put it on the floor? Or Miles? Hayward has the tools that fill the holes those players had (and even Korver although his shooting clearly makes up for it).

Hayward is better in transition too. He's a well balanced player.

One other factor going into it, and it's kind of a cop out, is the Jazz are going to be hard pressed to get that second #1 option outside this draft. I think you sign Hayward and hope for the best/consider him trade bait to get your other guy. Seems like you and most agree with that.

I think 4 years 45 mil. is fair market for Hayward. Same as I thought last summer. This puts him on par with Demar DeRozan, Nic Batum and Steph Curry.

I think that would be overpaying but i would be ok with that contract

Batum is flat out overpaid so I'd disregard him. Derozan and Curry are #1's on their teams (and they're all-stars). I don't think this is a good comparison. Hayward is several notches below those two guys.

I flat out don't like Hayward's game at all. Haven't for awhile. Problem is he is an asset and you can't just let an asset walk.

He will NEVER EVER be an all-star though. Ever.

13/7.5/5.1 for $12mm is overpaid?

I'd take all 3 over Hayward.

The only aspect to Hayward's game that I don't like, is his lack of swagger.

I think he still can improve as a penetrator, shooter, and passer-- and I think he will. I think the aspiration to sign him <10 million is delusional. He'll probably be offered 12mil/year by either Boston or Phoenix, and we'll guaranteed match.

Word, but he obviously didn't like Corbin either. Could have been a huge part of the lack of swagger.

I'm still shock somebody compared Hayward at this point to Derozan let alone Curry. Both are much better players. You could argue IMO him being on par with Batum, but Nic is overpaid and honestly I'd take him over Hayward.

It's easy to kick a guy when he's down.
I'd gladly take 44%/37% (his career avgs), which I think he gets back to - at the very least - under a new regime. Rebounds, steals and assists were all up this year; it was only his shooting that took a dive. He was just trying, and being asked, to do too much. Put him in an situation next year where the ball still goes to him a lot, but he's not asked to create plays every time. AK, early in his career, had a lot of success with that type of role.

Nobody was comparing the players, only the salaries. Salaries are similar.
