Locke's Draft Scouting Videos

Klay would be a solid pick at 12 and because of his 6'7" frame and his NBA legacy, I would probably pick him over Jimmer in that spot.
 
HIs scouting videos are stupid because he uses two games as his basis for his scouting.

They are okay breakdowns. It is funny to me how much Locke seems himself as a legitimate scout.

Locke may annoy some as a play-by-play guy, but the man does his homework. He's also very well connected with a ton of NBA scouts and coaches. I think he bases alot of his opinions off of what he learns from those connections, so these are actually pretty informative videos IMO.

This may be true, but he passes off those insights as his own. All that one foot, two foot stuff about Williams was clearly not his original observation. He heard that, saw it, and put weight on it. I just wish he would say, "Scouts have concerns about Williams jumping off two feet and you do see that a lot, etc." I could go on, but he hurts his credibility the way he's doing it.

I really like Locke's breakdowns, stats and opinions. But I recogonize he is looking at very paticular and small piece of the overall picture.

I do think the Jazz are making a big mistake by allowing him to post the breakdowns and critiques of players on the Jazz web-page. A few degrees of seperation should be observed. The blending of David Locke and Utah Jazz sets the stage for potentially embarasing and franchise damaging events in one of three ways.

First, is the pressure put on a player who can see on www.utahjazz.com that he is lazy, takes too many possesions off and won't make it in the NBA because he jumps off two feet. This is not the opionion of the Utah Jazz but try explaining that to a 19-year old. All he sees is the Utah Jazz all over the webpage. Think he is excited to come in for a workout? How about that first interview on draft night with the Jazz's own play by play voice-David Locke? I'm sure the guy won't hold a grudge and will just sign as a FA in 5 years right?

Second, his rankings, and breakdowns create a potential for disharmony within the Jazz organization. If he says Maynor doesn't have an NBA skill and KOC drafts Maynor the organization is not in harmony, one of them must be wrong. As a consumer of Jazz I am put in a position of choosing between the two. They can't both be right so fire the bum that is wrong. There are enough critics outside the family, why be your own enemy?

Finally, by strongly advocating his opinions to a reading adn listening office, he is building fan support for certain players and turning fan opinions against others. His presentation style is great, very matter of fact, and he can back it up with data. But when he doesn't advocate the player KOC drafts there is a problem. The fans end up booing the #9 pick. I am not suggesting that he be told by KOC who to spin in a favorable light, I'm suggesting that because he works for the Jazz and is posting on thier web-page a slight adjustment to his style would bennifit the organization. It might be better if he were to point out skills and attributes of the potential picks, focusing on how they could help the Jazz. Leave it to other people draw conclusions about this player good that player bad.
 
Last year Locke argued that he would rank Pau Gasol higher than Dirk in his top-100 nba player rankings. Haven't taken him seriously since.

Something that Locke readily concedes, not that the videos are stupid, but that he uses a limited number of games. I think he probably supplements it with his knowledge gained from reading, contacts with scouts, agents, GMs, etc.

Personally, I think Locke does good analysis. I like him.
 
Locke also watched every Al Jefferson possession from 2009 and thought he would be a fine pick and roll player because he converted most of them from a tiny sample size. He watches a lot of film, but is no scout, just a fan like the rest of us.

Who is the player most advanced at his position?
Two players were mentioned universally. Devin Harris, a 6-foot-3 point guard from Wisconsin, leads the charge as the player most ready to play his position. Scouts believe he could start and be productive. He would be my best guess for Rookie of the Year in 2005.
Emeka Okafor from national champion Connecticut was also mentioned as ready to go. Okafor showed the ability to hit jump hooks with both hands in the NCAA Tournament. The last player with those skills was Tim Duncan. However, Okafor's bad back has everyone nervous.

Oregon's Luke Jackson heads the list. Nick Jacobsen from Utah was lights out in his workouts and will most likely be a second-round pick based on his shooting alone.

This is unanimous: Rafael Araujo of BYU. In fact, he injured Jefferson in his workout with Seattle, and Jefferson was unable to work out for other teams.

Locke is a complete idiot. I thought when he came back into the market that he was someone who did their homework. But, what he does is he tries to spin whatever move he thinks the Jazz are going to make or not make he slants his story to support it. He was so wishy washy with Boozer depending on what he believed the Jazz were going to do he would change his story. I bet he is going to put out a video comparing Knight to Dwill and have rave reviews for him because it is the pick the Jazz are most likely going to make.

Locke's alright. I don't think he'd ever say his analysis should be anything more than his opinion and to take it for what it's worth. I guess you guys would rather have nothing.
 
I like that the dude puts forth effort and sticks his neck out. I crave Jazz info, and the guy supplies it. I have a built-in BS alarm and Locke doesn't set it off as much as the rest of the local radio personalities do.
 
He just posted Bismack Biyombo's and was down on him. I've never had a more ringing endorsement of the kid than having one of the worst draft evaluators doubt him. I'm not even saying that out of jest or to be a snarky dude. Locke's doubt seals it for me. Draft Biyombo.

To Locke's credit, he backs up many of his conclusions with analysis and stats (he likes his basketball version sabermetrics) unlike most sports talking heads who base everything on subjective perceptions or who just, frankly, pull things out of their arses. I find his takes, for the most part, interesting, well thought out, and informative. I guess I'm one of the few people here who quite like Locke. (Although I think Spence and Bill on KALL 700 are, overall, the best of the local sports talk shows.)

I should add, I used to hate Locke, but he's grown on me.
