What's new

Locke's endless apologies for Hayward.

Then you need to open your eyes. He is a perfect 2nd-3rd option. He passes well for his position, makes catch and shoot baskets and can play good D. He is an ideal player to support an allstar/superstar.
I'd agree that Hayward would be better fit as a 2nd or 3rd option on the Jazz (IF WE HAD A SUPERSTAR). But if you're building a championship caliber team, I think Hayward is more like a 4th option. For comparison/discussion purposes:

If he were on the Pacers, he'd be the 4th best player behind George, Hibbert, and Stephenson.
If he were on the Thunder, he'd be the 4th best player behind Durrant, Westbrook, and Ibaka
If he were on the Trailblazers, he'd be the the 4th best player behind Lillard, Aldridge, and Matthews
If he were on the Heat, he'd be the 4th best player behind LBJ, Wade, and Bosh.
If he were on the Spurs, he'd be the 4th best player behind Parker, Duncan, and Ginobili
If he were on the Rockets, he'd be the 4th best player behind Harden, Howard, and Parsons
If he were on the Clippers, he'd be the 4th best player behind Griffin, CP3, and Crawford

Are you saying offensive option, or just overall better player?

There are some players on those list who are better than Hayward, but I wouldn't put them ahead on an offensive option list.

Guys like Howard, Hibbert, and Ibaka are all better players, but I wouldn't say they are really "options" on those teams. Especially Hibbert, he has been shooting 41% from the field in 2014, which is equally embarrassing for big man to be shooting that poorly as Hayward's recent shooting struggles.

Maybe a bit of both. If you really need a basket, I think all of the players listed are better scoring options (other than the players on the list that are post players - Hibbert, Howard, Ibaka) than Hayward.

That FG% by Hibbert is a shocker for sure...especially for a 7 footer.

None of those teams could afford a Hayward as a fourth option, so this isn't a moot point.

Personal comparisonwise yes. But if the play runs theough them in a position then it's the right opt. If you go for the shooter, they already have better shooters than him. Whereever the defending team gives the space, Hay is left fourth.

I think the biggest problem I have with Hayward is that he isn't worth 10-12. He should be right where SVG said....7.5 mil.

and that is FAIR.

lmao @ boston celtics game thread.

What’s with Hayward…? Seems like he is just another Jeff green, if he gonna play like this i don’t want him
by Saeed Ghassemzadeh on Feb 24, 2014 | 11:19 PM

He’s shooting 18% in his last ten games from three.

YES that is indeed how hayward plays. TAKE EM! TAKE ALL OF EM! lmaoooooooooo

It's not that he's a bad player, but if any player who had previously shot 40% from 3 suddenly can't hit the ocean from the boat it's hard to know what to think. I know he can shoot because I have seen him do it before, I didn't even know it was possible to regress like this.

It's a little odd, and at this point it will have driven down his value tremendously, but if he really can't ever figure out how to shoot again he's not even worth 7.5. This slump has gone on for so long it's making me question whether it's really a slump, as dumb as that may sound. Such a weird season for him.

perhaps it's due to a change in his shooting coach

perhaps...it's cos Hayward was the 4th and 5th man?

PERHAPS?!

change of shooting coach? are you kidding me?

Why not? his shot has been worse ever since hornaceck left. his form is visibly worse and regardless of what option he is, he's missing good looks that he has buried consistently in the past.

so he loses his shooting coach and he falls apart?

im sorry man, but a player DOES not lose his shot b/c of a coach leaving. IMPOSSIBLE.

I can see some obvious circumstances where it is possible.

old coach leaves -> new coach comes in -> new coach tries to apply different technique -> shooter loses rhythym

could be as simple as that. I don't know what is going on with him behind the scenes and i don't even know if he uses a shooting coach, I'm just looking for a reason for how someones shoot can go from what it has been consistently over his career to being so bad this year. and accept that having a larger role on offense was inevitably going to cause his numbers to drop, but i have watched him miss open shot after open shot badly this year and i don't believe that can be because of the role change.

I really think that Hayward's sharp decline this season is all mental. It's hard for me to believe that a professional athlete suddenly forgets how to do something they've done their whole life like shooting a basketball. He really needs to see a shrink something is wrong with him upstairs.

a shooter doesn't FORGET how to shoot cos a new coach comes out.

please man. the excuses for hayward are insane.

hes a 7.5mil player 3rd 4th 5th option. probably a bench player thats all.

You will never win anything with a player so inconsistent as Andrei Hayward.

We would be better off with a player who is less talented but more consistent.

I agree.

His consistency bugs me as does his body language.

I have now revised my $$ for Hayward.

Before I said he was worth 10/year but someone will offer 12/13

Now: He is worth 8/year. Someone will offer 10/11.

Will the Jazz match ? Should they match ?

Who would have thought before this season started that Jeremy Evans was going to be a better shooter than Hayward? Hayward has taken a massive step back.
