Lockout!!!

Sorry for anyone who works at ESA.

There is so much dissatisfaction with the NBA already, this is just the icing on the cake and will definitely make fans lose interest in placing their money in a league that obviously doesn't give two ****s about them. Nice work, gentlemen.

I imagine Utah/Portland/OKC will suffer the least when the league gets back, since the NBA is the only game in town.

But for cities like Denver/Philadelphia/etc. where they were never great historical attendance draws, eek.

Oh, you'll cave all right, Billy. You, Derek and the rest of the chumps will all cave. And when you finally come to your dim senses and recognize how pathetically weak your position really is, you will have given up far more ground than you ever stood to gain by "talking tough". You are destined to lose.

Love your quote. Haven't the players seen what happened to the NHL players? They are all idiots...or at least their leaders are.

This is who really gets screwed. All the little people that need the NBA to pull in a measly 60K a year. It's too bad.

As this drags on I'm blaming the players more and more. This has nothing to do with what the average player gets paid, this is all about the top end of the payscale.

Where's the fan union to demand ticket prices be cut and hot dogs go for no more than $8 a piece?

I suspect the same. Are the journeymen even part of the process, or is it the punk elite max players who have Derek Fisher's ear?

This is pretty much how I feel. I'm not really siding with the owners, but I do believe the majority of the players aren't really being represented here, so much as the big names. I guess I'm blaming a small percentage of the players.

If this is really being held up by system issues - specifically the fines incurred in the new LT - this is more about the small guys than the big ones. You don't acquire huge contract guys to go from over the cap/under the tax to over the tax.

Or not. I don't know.

Because revenue has been growing so much in the NHL since their lockout, players will now receive 57% (players' revenue share is on a sliding scale dependent on total revenue...a policy way too sensible for the NBA). NBA players won't be getting anything near that. I don't understand what you're trying to say here.

Just so we all understand how the NHL will destroy the NBA if there's an extended lockout, here are the annual salary cap numbers in the NHL since the lockout:

The NHL is booming- 9% growth per year in the NHL salary cap, even with the recession, as opposed to 3% growth per year since 05/06 in the NBA salary cap- and if the NBA goes away, they'll swoop in and get some half decent TV deals, leaving the NBA out in the cold. The owners certainly dragged their feet far too long on this thing, but I'm surprised the players aren't willing to get this thing finalized now(especially since it's only going to be a 6-year deal).

The arrogant ignorance about the NHL on this site is quite a head-scratcher. Overall, the NHL product has been fantastic since the lockout, and fans are responding (IIRC, attendance numbers are better in the NHL than in the NBA...not that that's saying much).

8 bucks a dog? I can get 16 nathan dogs for that at the grocery store....cook them up, cover them with mustard and onions....and have a blast watching movies I've already seen!

For the record, I think Stern is a douchebag, but Billy Hunter is making a huge mistake if he thinks getting into a battle of the wills with Stern is anything but a losing game. Stern and his owners are completely ready to sit out the season and there is noway that the majority of NBA players are. Not only that, after they sit out a year, the NBA and Stern are only going to have MORE leverage. Like Stern warned about a week ago, the deals aren't getting any "better" for the players the longer they sit out.

One thing is for sure, they're definitely going to swoop in and get my viewing this winter. Even if the NBA comes back for a shortened season, I'm getting bitter enough to just say **** it and not watch.

At this point, the NBA is so far from being "about the game", it's pathetic.

it is kind of amazing that a union can claim to represent both Kobe and, say Jeremy Evans. Kobe is due more than 30 times the salary Evans is this season.

I blame Fisher. I mean come on he comes from a team that wants a huge salary cap so they don't have penalties for exploiting it anymore. Same with Garnett and Pierce who I have seen in some background pics.

I think less of Fisher than most, but this is a little out there.

A stricter spending cap on teams means less money for players. It's that simple.

My attitude towards both sides is also souring. Last night when watching football and talking about the lock out I realized that even if the owners get the numbers they want that wont change the broken system of competitive balance and Stern (and most of the owners) wont care if they get the numbers they want so they can cash in.
I gave up on them caring about the fan a long time ago so I conceded giving the fan concessions (like lowering prices etc....) but my eternal optimism hoped they hadn't given up on "sport" and that they wanted to have competitive balance/paritybut it all but died last night.
I mean look at the NFL going into the year who'd a ever dared to imagine the Lions, Bills and 9er's would be a top their divisions, heck I'd throw the Texans in there but that is not that big of surprise. In the NBA could or would that ever happen? Sadly we all know the answer to that isn't only no it's HECK NO.
I like hockey and loved going to the Golden Eagles as a kid (old Flames farm team) and as GVC said Hockey is increasing and improving more than the NBA. So it isn't just the NFL and only 1 game a week and a shorter season, the NHL has a very similar structure to the NBA arena size, season length and teams etc.. You know why they're on the up tick, not to make it personal and just blame Stern (even though I'd like to and he deserves it) a lot of it is COMPETITIVE balance and parity there is other things as well obviously that is player driven IMO but that is another subject, the owners and Stern can control the parity but sadly wont.

... parity...

And the NBA could do things to spread parity to a degree, but it's much more difficult given the inordinate amount of impact an individual can make in the NBA.

I don't give a **** if they play or not. I would like to have the young players get the opportunity to work on their game with the coaches, but other than that, I've got other things to do. This isn't 1998-99 where I was envisioning a championship. I'll watch football, some college ball, and watch DVD's from Netflix/Quikster/Netflix.
